coollant smell!
i already had my water pump replaced under warranty. before the replacement i was smelling a lot of coolant whenever i came to a stop. there was not only a smell, the coolant was going low also.
now that the water pump has been replaced, the level stays full. the only thing is that i smell the gasket putty they put around the pump and i think that i am still smelling coolant, but just not as bad as before.
what are your opinions?
do you think that there could be still a leak?
also, after a dealer replaces the pump will they then again pressure test the system to make sure the leak has gone away, or do they just assume the problem has been solved?
thank you in advance for responding.

Coolant odor in the interior is usually caused by a leak, usually very slight in the heater core. Another sign of this in the winter is the windows fogging up. Keep an eye on the coolant level, a decrease will confirm a leak. You can also have the system pressure tested to see if its leaking, but in your case be certain the heater valve is open

hi charliev68,
looks like we had the similar problem, just curious how much did you pay for the water pump relacement? a new one or ...? on what year/model of car?
I got this so-called "remanafactured" water pump replaced for 277 from dealer , I didn't even know it's a remanafactured one until I picked up my car today , and 277 bucks!!? it's not even a "new new" one, omg. these dealers sucka.
it's for my '97 c280.

when they replaced it, it was brand new. did not charge me anything because it was under warranty.
took it back to the dealer they did a pressure test and there was no leak.

after the pressure test it does not smell anymore.
they stated that there was some residual coolant from the water pump replacement. they cleaned it off and the smell has seemed to have gone away.
