Do not reecharge it unless its not working properly. Pressures should be checked before a recharge and after. Cost is irrelevant, if it needs it do it and if its low have it leak checked

Sosh is right. You have to first find out why you lost refrigerant. Too many people think their system needs to be only topped off when the reality is that there may be something more serious that needs fixing.
Is the a/c still working with the compressor engaging but putting out warmer air? Then it may simply need a recharge. If the system won't hold its charge for more than two months, then you have what's considered a large leak that needs to be found and fixed.

In the meantime, if you suspect a leak or low refridgerant, don't run the A/C since you run the risk of ruining the compressor due to lack of lubrication.
