Car won't start after lengthy storage, key is useless

Hi, new to this forum, I hope I am doing this right...
2003 Mercedes C240 has been stored for aprox 1 year. It was running fine prior and had a new battery installed. After some time the battery ran low and the alarm went off out of the blue. The battery was disconnected and remained that way until recently. The fob key will not open the doors nor start the car. The antenna is good and battery in the fob has been replaced. If anyone has any information as to what may be wrong and a possible fix I will be forever grateful. I have spent hours upon hours scouring the internet and watching videos and have too much contradictory information and no idea where to go from here.
Thanks a bunch!

You mention the key is good as the battery was changed. What did you do about the dead starter battery?

I hooked up a battery from another one of my cars just to see if it would start. Plan on buying a new battery for the benz.

Update:
My husband bought a new battery for this car. Car has power, just won't start. Radio, lights, everything works but key won't turn.

Do you have a 2nd key to try? When you put the key in the receiver - do you hear the car recognize it and release the steering lock?

No second key. When the key is placed in the ignition it won't budge. No clicking, simply does not move.

I might add that the car alarm doesn't shut off, we removed the fuse to get it quiet.

Runs like a charm!
