2007 Mercedes E350 4matic
Question P0025, left exhaust cam problem, camshaft adjuster or adjuster solenoid failure?

Hello! I'm working on figuring out a problem with my 2007 Mercedes e350 4matic with the 272 engine. The car makes grinding/clicking noise a few seconds after start up, has a slight misfire at idle, and a more noticeable one on start up. The noise and misfire are far worse when outside temperatures are low. The noise and severe misfire at start up generally only manifest on cold start/first start of the day. I also have misfire codes for cylinders 4-5-6, which correspond with the left exhaust camshaft adjustment position code. What I'm now trying to determine is this: does this sound like it's a failure of the magnetic camshaft actuator, or the actual mechanical camshaft adjuster, which I believe is attached to the timing chain and much more involved to replace? Any tips on determining the culprit, other than removing and testing the magnetic camshaft actuator? Thanks!

not a merc
Step 1. Check valve timing!
Remove all 4 .cam sensors, turn engine to 305 degress and all the circles on the disk must be centred in the cam sensor holes. If not replace chain and tensioner. check balance shaft.

Same thing with my ML350 except I have P0024. I do believe this is camshaft adjuster failure.

the magnetic actuator won’t make chain noise, so you can check that off. You need to take time and oil pressure. If time is on and oil pressure is good you need to check for check valves behind secondary Chain tensioner. If that’s good change adjuster
