E320 Temporary Death

I am experiencing an infrequent but challenging problem with my 98 E320 at 80,000 miles. While driving at moderate speeds the engine will stop dead and all lights on the dash come on. After costing to a stop it will start right up again and run fine for a week or so. The challenging part is when this occurs in the middle of a left turn in front of traffic.

Code scanning at the OBD II port shows no codes. In researching the TSB's on Alldata I did find one TSB that described a similar problem as related to an intermittent hard reset of the ECM and the recommendation is to replace the ECM. Prior to doing that I checked and cleaned all connections to the ECM and surrounding controllers but that did not seem to help.

So I have two questions. Does anyone have any similar experiences like this problem and/or other advice? And does anyone have a recommendation for obtaining a new/rebuilt ECM other than the dealer. Thanks in advance for your help.

Try the Search above for 'Crankshaft position sensor'. Sounds like it might be the culprit.

It seems that all electrical power to the car cuts out intermittently. All the lights come on the dash beacuse power is restored, similar to turning the key to the ON position. In addition to the ECU, check other connections (battery, fuse box), maybe even the ignition switch.
