Thanks a lot for the props, lee! I only wish I could answer everybody's questions right away, but I have a life outside of the computer too. 642 members right now, and one technician. You do the math!

I'll try to dig the issue out that lists them and re type all the rankings of the Mercedes vehicles. I just have to find the issue.
I know the E class was high on the list as well.

The most reliable of the newer Benzes are.....
-the SLK230. It has the 111 engine (4-cylinder). I don't think I've ever seen a 111 leak, not even with higher mileage. It's light weight means less stress on the motor and all drivetrain components. If there's any weak spot in the SLK230, it's the retractable top. But even that isn't too problematic.
-the C230 Kompressor (202 body style). Again, it has the 111, which is damn near bulletproof. A little rough for a 4-cylinder as compared to Honda and Toyota, but nonetheless a fantastic engine. If I were going to buy a 4-door Mercedes as my own personal vehicle, it would be a C230 Kompressor.
-the SL500/600. When a car is in production for 12 years straight, it's safe to assume all the bugs have been worked out of it. This is true for the most part with the 129 roadster. The only problems I've seen with the newer SLs have been relating to the convertible top.
And about my choice of personal transportation-
Put yourself in my shoes. You look out the door of the dealership and see a line of Benzes reaching from the service entrance, out to the street. Some are in for routine maintenance, but most of them are broken. What would your impression be of these cars after seeing this day after day, month after month? Granted, they are good cars, but they do break a lot. And working on them pays really well, as compared to nearly every other car maker out there. With that said, I will be adding another car to my stable soon. It will be either a 129 500SL, a 126-body 560SEC, or a 124-body E320 coupe. But only because when they DO break, I can get parts at invoice price, and labor is free because I do it myself.

my old dealer was a cadillac/subaru dealership.
i remember taking in my subaru for oil changes/maintenance (not repair). and there were a couple of soobies for service but there were a lot of caddies for repair (including a pink Avon model). i talked to some of the service guys and they said the same thing. they'd never buy a cadillac b/c they have to fix them all the time. of course, i'm not too impressed w/ soobie quality either, but i think its better. and my '95 acura integra was truly a work of wonder - never a problem except for the ones i stupidly caused.
but if i could get an employee discount on an MB, i'd get it! and the hourly rate the dealership charges for service, you got to be making a decent amount (probably more than me at least). btw, i'm 32 now. is it too late to become a MB mechanic?
