I installed on a very old Win 7 laptop for the heck of it this evening (I have a complete system coming and wanted to play around with it). After a couple of tutorials, I was getting through it pretty well.

Wow, Thank you "LoweredE320". And MBWorld forum for having so many knowledgeable, engaged and supportive members.
Just found this for the first time, followed your directions, and it is up and running. With wired internet it took a bit more than an hour. And it works just fine.
Your contribution is clear and adequately documented - installed on a 2011-era Lenovo Flex4 running Win10. The VB-WIS/ASRA is running in Win8.1, which is incidentally my overwhelming favorite of the series. With 5 early-aught MB's, this VB-WIS/ASRA is a significant job-aid.
Years back I bought an eBay version of this running on Virtual Machine, which was intermittent. Uninstalled and reinstalled a few times - finally abandoned it.
TIP: Although I had previously and minimally 'used' WIS/ASRA, I first went to the "?" (Help) icon, watched the tutorials and gleaned the other topics. Best use of time for any first-time/novice user that I can recommend. (The tutorial runs slowly as if it is an internet video (https/ and all), but isn't best I can tell.) Also, there is the history of WIS updates, with the changes at each version.
DO YOUR HOMEWORK FIRST. Valuable, especially for tidbits like the clickable links in the wiring diagrams, and the color option for those as well.

NOTES:
- I have not found a way to 'add a printer' for printing. If anyone knows of a work-around, please share.
Nor of Screen Capture (Host+E) or Snapshot (Host+T) which can be accessed for printing in or outside of VB. - There is a way to 'set the clock' so the software doesn't expire - anyone know how?
- Too bad EPC is not 'active', but in the one section there are good exploded parts diagrams for reference.
- "Copyright Controversy" comment debunked below. This is now purloined into the public domain, and likely has expired protection just like my WIN98! As well, there are not any claims evident in the software nor in the MB links.

Try it, jay123.
Search the web for something like: Install VirtualBox on USB Drive
or,
1. Follow LoweredE320 instructions thru 2nd step, then copy the 3 extracted files to a USB drive. (2 ea vbox, and 1 vdi)
2. Complete step 3 on your "PC" so Virtual Box is in your programs folder.
3. Add the .vbox to the VirtualBox machine as in Step 4.
if it works, post results

three questions
1) does it indeed expire? ..... I have a 5-6 year old version that has never expired.... not yet
2) has anyone tried a 2020 vin to see of it takes.... my version will only do up to MY18 vin's
3) what is the latest version available in cyberspace?... latest model year that will function....
thinking of upgrading to 2020 or later...
thanks

I found one way to print the WIS documents is to first use the print function icon on the upper right tool bar in the WIS window. This puts a *.xps format document file into the VM documents folder (be sure to name it). In the lower left corner of the VM desktop, you should find a file folder icon -- click on it and then open the documents directory. The xps file you printed should be there. Drag the file onto the VM desktop. Then drag the file from the VM desktop to the PC's Windows desktop. Double-click the the file icon on the PC's desktop and it should open, and you should be able to print to any printer you have connected to your PC. All this takes some re-sizing of the multiple windows so you can drag from one to another, but you should be able to figure it out.
After the files are on your PC's desktop, create a Mercedes WIS folder somewhere in your documents folder, and drag the files there so they're all in one place.

Thank you so very much!
I can confirm that it still works on May 29, 2024.
The WIS license in the Virtual PC is valid until the end of 2030, so it's good for another 6 years. After that it will only work if the PC's date is set to sometime before 2030.
I find the WIS completely useless on finding how to change the AC compressor on a W212 diesel. Absolutely no instructions.

Apparently, there are not instructions for your engine and car to replace the a/c compressor. However, I would think you could find the instructions on another model that would walk you through the steps of recovering the refrigerant, evacuating the system, replacing the drier, etc. You then need to figure out how to remove it. There is a section on compressor belt removal that may help.

A couple of weeks ago I snagged a 2020 WIS/ASRA & EPC EWA version on ebay for about $35. It came on a USB thumb drive. It uses VMware to host an old Win version on more recent Win OS. Install was a snap. I only needed to make my Win 10 machine virtual host happy by installing Microsoft Hyper-V. It works well and allowed me to find the correct part numbers for some splash shields for my W222 with AMG package. Shields are different from W222 without AMG package.
