Fuel Additive

As pare of the oil service on Mercedes Benz cars, they recommend their fuel additive. Is there something special about their product or are there similar and equivalent products out there at local parts stores ie, BG44k. Tecron. Lucas, Liquid Molly etc.

What does the Operator's Manual say? Mine generally discourages it. If you live where there is crappy gasoline, then maybe you should use it. But for general maintenance, I would say your dealer is just trying to stuff your invoice with unnecessary expenses. If you use brand-name premium fuel, then I would say the additive is a waste of money, but I doubt it is harmful to anything other than your wallet. How much do they want to charge?

(By the way, Costco sells only Top Tier gasoline.)

Nothing special. They'll just be rebranded. Quality fuel is your long-term answer. They'll just stick a bottle in the tank and charge you $100 for a $15 bottle. Head to an auto parts store and DIY. Take your Mrs out for dinner with the saving.

I had mine in at the stealer when under warranty and they rang and offered me a "fuel injection clean" for $150. I asked if he was going to take off all 8 injectors and bench test them, or was he simply throwing some stuff in the tank? His response was "I suppose you don't want it then" 😄

If you're buying quality "Top Tier" rated fuel (you can find brands online), you shouldn't need fuel additives. As important is buying fuel from a dispensing station that moves a lot of product so that you know the fuel is fresh and the pump filters get changed regularly.

Dealers are stingy with their expensive little bottles. You need to get yourself a whole jug like this guy.

This guy is hilarious! At first I was cringing. Then I totally enjoyed his pretending to be a knob.

That Lucas stuff is what I've used most. I've sucked down two gallons in the past 8 months. Usually 6oz in a tank. It lowers octane so I will not be adding more, or a gallon at once...
Tried Marvel Mystery oil, which is likely most the same as Lucas, but Lucas has cleaners. So they say.
Used SeaFoam many times, and probably in every eng ever.
Tried that CataClean last year to see if it could maybe bump power and/or make the O2's respond quicker. No, it did nothing...
Have also used misc products on sale, or that come free with a purchase. Too many to name.
Tried octane boost a couple times, which I discovered is mostly a scam.
Also used Moth *****, back when I could get them.
I now I add Ethanol, which does boost octane
Then of course I always add stuff to my oil, to the annoyance of a lot of people here I bought some water, I mean 0wt, to lube things around the house like knives, hinges etc. No additives... I transfer it to a small unmarked bottle because I don't want to traumatize my car, should it see it. And I keep it at least 10' from the car at all times, in case I slip and fall I don't want it contaminating the car, or taking the paint off or something.
