Which MB Diagnostic hardware/software do I need for my MY2016 GLC300 X253

Hi everyone. I'm trying to determine which STAR diagnostics product works with a 2016 GLC300.

I'm not sure if I can use a C3 or if I need to purchase a C4.

If C3 is supported, what versions of any various software is needed?

If C4, what software versions are needed for that? I know that C3 has a security dongle and you need to setup the security keys to get it to work. Does C4 have the same requirements? Is C4 usable offline like C3? I know C4 is wifi vs hardwired like the C3.

The hardware is easy to find for C4 on Alibaba, but what about the software? I don't need a PC laptop as I have a robust laptop that I can use for this use case. I'm assuming the C4 software can run in a VM.

Any thoughts, comments, suggestions, etc. would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!!!

C3 is for older cars using DAS. You need a C4 with DoIP. The XENTRY software can be tricky. The best source for the information you need is @BenzNinja and he is running a special right now that is a great deal.

Thanks for the reply, JettaRed.

I haven't kept up with MB STAR diagnostic tools since I bought the C3 for my 2006 S350 (and some older MBs that I no longer own). It looks like things have changed a bit. I use XENTRY (Software version: 14.1.6.0; Date version: 01-2014) with the C3, so I'm familiar with it. It requires the USB security key. I created a VM for the environment and use an FDDI USB/serial port dongle that requires a driver. It works great so I don't need a dedicated "old as the hills" PC to use the C3.

I'm not looking for remote diagnostic help, which is what I believe DoIP is used for. I just want to use Xentry with the C3 and updated software, if possible.

Do you (or anyone else for that matter) know if I can upgrade the Xentry software to a more updated version to support diags on the 2016 GLC300 (X253)?

I really don't want to waste money purchasing a C4 if the C3 can do it. I hope you understand that. But, if I have to get a C4 to support the GLC300, so be it.

BenzNinja only supports the traditional Dell/Lenovo PCs. I get it. He needs to support his customer base and needs to keep the configurations to a minimum.

thank you!

Edit to my previous post. I just read that the latest software on the C3 is 09-2014. That won't help since my GLC300 is a MY 2016. It looks like I need to get a C4 SD Connect.

Can someone confirm that the C4 will work on my 2016 GLC300 (X253) as a standalone unit without the need for DoIP and/or UDS protocol?

thanks again!

That's not really accurate. I believe BenzNinja supports any platform that runs Windows, though he recommends a certain Lenovo platform. I use a refurbished Lenovo ThinkPad X260 that I got off Amazon for around $160.

I believe the DoIP allows using a wireless connection to the C4, not for remote assistance. I don't use wireless because I have found it to be less reliable than a wired connection to the C4.
