C300 2010 pre-purchase inspection issues - are they a dealbreaker?

Hi everyone!

I just got the results from an inspection on a C300 I want to purchase tomorrow. The main findings I am most concerned about are the following:

"Front stabilizer links are cracked"

"Transmission pan gasket leaking also drivers side bank cam sensors and variable timing sensors leaking"

Here are the images: https://imgur.com/a/opPgByo

How difficult and pricey would this be to fix? It's a friend of a friend's car and hasn't been used much (29k miles), but kept moving every 2-3 weeks or so. All other service is done properly and frequently. Thank you!

Sorry about that. It's a 2010 C300 Sport. The mechanic quoted me around $2.5k parts + labor for the following:
- Replace both front stabilizer bar control link
- Replace each camshaft position sensor
- Replace Crankshaft position sensor
- Replace RWD Transmission oil pan gasket or filter

the list sounds right but the fluff accounting is a highway robbery :

$2500 PARTS only
+ open LABOR charge
= scam

This is 90mn worth of work plus cheap supplies under $500.

It should be $1500 in total, out of the door:
$500 parts
+ $500 labor
+ $500 gravy
= $1500 Total

Why a scam... once you know the job parts you also know the labor time.

Dealer would be cheaper!

Sorry, it's about $2.5k total for both parts + labor. Here is some more detail:

Labor
Remove & Replace Each Camshaft Position Sensor - $597.00
Remove & Replace Crankshaft Position Sensor - $258.70

Parts
Engine Variable Valve Timing (VVT) Adjuster Magnet x4 - $289.52
Original Engine Crankshaft Position Sensor x1 - $88.24

Labor
Remove & Replace Stabilizer Bar Control Link. (BOTH FRONT) - $298.50

Parts
Suspension Stabilizer Bar Link x1 - $87.76
Suspension Stabilizer Bar Link Kit x1 - $81.62

Labor
Remove & Replace RWD Transmission Oil Pan Gasket Or Filter - $358.20

Parts
Transmission Filter Kit x1 - $74.79
They quoted quite a lot for the transmission fluid here but I'd supply my own.

So you'd say this is unreasonable? I am no mechanic myself but I have worked some with cars (only basic stuff though). Would I be able to find these parts (they are cheaper to buy myself) and do all this?

Okay, that's more in line

Now you're still missing intake VVT Gear + Tensioner.
I see VVT Magnet but not gear itself not tensioner.
You may want to keep these items grouped together.
may be not needed - Only leaking plastic CPS + Solenoid.... without cheap pigtails??

Thanks for the input! Really appreciate it. Quick question - the crankshaft/camshaft sensor replacement seems fairly straightforward and labor cost seems steep. Would it make sense to do this myself and let them do the rest?

Very good thinking
Buy your wife a prime rib dinner and a show at the local casino instead.

The tranny is not a lot of fun to work under without a lift!

Working on engine top is rewarding... mechanic forgot to include PIGTAILS to prevent your "$10k oil in harness" repair.

They did say "Transmission pan gasket leaking also drivers side bank cam sensors and variable timing sensors leaking", so I guess it's just that.

Thank you! Will do that too then.

To summarize: I should get the wiring extension/harnesses for both CPS and solenoids? And then ofc replace the adjuster magnets

Yes to this:
"I should get the wiring extension/harnesses for both CPS and solenoids"

No to that:
"And then ofc replace the adjuster magnets"
The so called "magnets" (ie. VVT solenoids) are not directly affected by extreme heatsoaks like CPS are. Inspect them if you will.

Add pigtails extensions to VOS + Solenoids gor good measures to protect against "oil in harness" contamination.

Hmm, I thought the leak would also come from the solenoids and IF they start leaking, then they should be replaced.
Also, sorry, what is VOS? From what I see I can't find pigtails for the CPS for my model, only for the solenoids.

yes to this:
-- "the leak would also come from the solenoids and IF they start leaking, then they should be replaced"
-> Inspect and perhaps replace if leaking. Pigtail preemptively (2 wires)

Typos...
-- "what is VOS? From what I see I can't find pigtails for the CPS for my model, only for the solenoids"
-> Read CPS: Camshaft Position Sensors
These are the leakers that should be replaced and pigtailed 100% preemptively (3 wires).

Look up the parts and prices at www.fcpeuro.com, www.autohausaz.com, or www.pelicanparts.com. I think you will find your parts MUCH cheaper. For example, four Mercedes OE (Bosch) CPSs should run about $100, not $300!
