B 200 (M270, 1.6L)- Rough engine, then not. What is it?

I was driving my wife's 2013 B 200. It is gas powered, 4 cylinder turbo. I believe it is an M270 1.6L. Manual Transmission. 165,000 KM. I bought in 2016 from a dealer in Germany, certified pre-owned with 80,000 KM.

Sitting at a light today and I start to fell a heavy vibration. I thought it was coming from the large truck in front of me, but no. I look down and the check engine light starts to flash before coming on full. The car is running rough for sure, missing on at least one cylinder. I did not really see the tach drop or bounce. I continue driving with it rough, temperature drops from 95c to 80C before climbing back up again. I had Range on my trip computer because I was low on fuel. It climbed from roughly 40 KM to 65 KM. I thought that was telling me it wasn't using fuel for all of the cylinders. I was not going that far. I park the car. Shut it off, restart, and no more check engine light, and no more rough engine. I have driven the car twice since then and no light, and no rough running.

My first gut was fouled plug or bad injector. I will not be able to get it to a shop for a week or so.

Any educated guesses given that it resolved itself, although it will probably be back?

Thank you,

Sixcarbs

165k.Km 1.6L/Turbo...
One cylinder is not in working shape.
Let's go for the obvious first, Ja?

-- Scan the whole chassis for stored + current faults

-- Deal with ignition tune-up (new plugs/ swap coils)

-- Do a BORE-SCOPE WHILE PLUGS OUT

-- Change engine oil now if thin black.

Did you know... Formula-1 race engines are also "1.6L turbos"?
They run these engines at 15,000Rpm.
New engine every race!!

Thank you Doctor!

I have a service appointment on the 8th of September. Will share and report back.

I had know idea the F1 engines were only 1.6 liters. Amazing!

That sounds good.
The key is to do a cylinders bore inspection during spark-plug job before deciding to replace any working fuel injectors.

A random misfire that clears itself points to a failing coil pack. It's a very common issue on these engines. The heat from the engine makes it fail, then it works again after cooling down. Check for fault codes, but plan on replacing the spark plugs and the specific coil pack that caused the code.

Well....

My Independent changed the oil and filter, and air filter. The car was showing 2 years/10,000 KM past due for it.

They said they did not have a scope, and they said no codes showed up at all.

I know, I know. I need to find a better shop and get my own scanner.
