What are these things

My mate has just bought an SL55 R230 and it has two aftermarket boxes under the rear bumper.

Has anyone got any idea what they are? Not reversing lights ot additional brake lights and the factory parking aids work fine so I doubt its that.

??

To me they would seem to be aftermarket radar/laser detectors/jammers

Yes. Quite a few of the systems out there have sensors all over the car. Many brands - and legal reprocussions state to state....country to country.

This is an example of Escort with the wired mounted devices that live at the front and rear of the car.

bumper mystery box

How about we open one up to see the technology that's involved?
Some kind of parking proximity sensor. It needs harness power for active sensing.

likely no need to open, just unscrew from the car and look at the label…. Or follow the wires to see where they go. If there is no head unit for the detector, it’s unlikely you can get it running for a price lower than new, though the prices of detectors have skyrocketed.
