2003 Mercedes SL500R AMG Designo Edition $15900

2003 Mercedes SL500 Designo Launch Edition $15900.

Located in the SF Bay Area peninsula.

This is not the cheapest SL500, but it is the best. If you just want the cheapest one and are prepared to deal with the many 4-5 digit repair bills that will come with it, please look at other cars. I am selling a no-worries, fully functional car in close to perfect condition.

This is a clean title, dealer maintained (on schedule) since new, fully loaded roadster in limited Designo Launch Edition ($9,300 factory option). Engine is clean and everything is working as it should, no weird noises, transmission shifting is very smooth, engine pulls strongly, doors close with a solid clunk, no rattles or stories. Drives like a dream, has plenty of low end torque and power from the V8, handles very well, and makes you feel like you're sitting in a $100,000 car (because it is). The car is completely stock and still has the original new car smell, despite the 112k miles.

It has all the accessories it should have, including spare tire, compressor, complete tool kit, complete owners manuals with case, jack and both keys.

Either spend the money up front to enjoy a properly maintained and 100% healthy car, or spend it over the next year towing a cheap one to the shop every month. Interior is 10/10 and exterior is 9.5/10.
Never been in an accident, never been painted or had body repairs, other than a few very minor rock chip touch ups.

All maintenance has been carried out by Mercedes dealers, except the recent ABC suspension overhaul, which was carried out with a Porsche race technician friend of mine.

Fully loaded with these options and more:
Designo Launch Edition:
1 of 2300 Units
Designo Metallic Silver Exterior
Designo Black Exclusive Nappa Full Leather Interior (Leather Stitched Dash, Doors, Center Console, etc)
Alcantara Full Headliner

IMO you really should remove the AMG badge. The SL500 is a great car in its own right. For those who know about AMGs, people will be making a judgement call on you and the car. For those who don't, once they find out what an AMG model entails and cross-references that info with your car, they are going to be confused at a minimum and think you are misleading them at the worst.

The car is exactly as it was when delivered. It has not had badges added. AMG also does styling enhancements as well as engine upgrades, which is the case on this car. It came with AMG exhaust tips and some other features.

If the car was trying to mislead, it would have SL55 badges instead of SL500

Would be nice if you keyboard warriors checked your facts before bad mouthing other peoples cars that you have no intention of buying.

My car has the window sticker, seats and carpets all embossed with 'Designo'. The paint code is 'Designo Silver'.

It is identical in every way to this other Launch edition car that sold for $28k:

I guarantee that the car did not have that AMG badge from the factory. Maybe the dealer decided to put it on, but that badge does not come from the factory for non AMG vehicles.

You're right. Maybe I should just set it on fire and push the burnt out carcass into the nearest lake after apologizing to you all for wasting your time...

You keep putting SL500R. At first I thought it was a typo, but it's clearly not.

The R stands for Roadster. My title, window sticker and insurance all list the car as a SL500R instead of the usual SL500

You know, we are just trying to help you sell your car and you come back being a complete dick. You're posting into a mercedes forum where people know a whole lot about mercedes benzs. People here know the difference between an AMG sport package and a real AMG car. It was just SUGGESTED that you remove the badge because its not a real AMG car regardless if it has minor appearance upgrades. Good luck selling your SL500R AMG.

Is that really how you view those posts? Because I have a hard time as seeing them as anything other than plain bad mouthing from people who know less than they think. As I already stated, the car is 100% as it came from the dealer, not a single thing has been added other than genuine Mercedes maintenance parts. I don't want any 'input' on my ad, only questions from prospective buyers. If you don't want to buy the car, why are you reading this?

However, thanks to Airmousam for reminding me to add the miles.

This is bad mouthing? I feel that you are easily offended and unwilling to accept that perhaps "straight from the dealer" is not the same thing as "straight from the factory".

To tell if your car is a true AMG...log into AMG private lounge.

https://www.mercedes-amg.com/private.../login?lang=en

You have to put in your VIN# to become a member...if you can enter, it's an AMG...if not= no AMG

Sir, what you have is a beautifully maintained, SL500 designo. It is not an AMG. It does not even have the AMG appearance package on it. It does not have AMG dual sport tips. I have seen the "R" thing once before. I can only imagine it relates to the fact that your car is an R230. The "R" does in fact stand for roadster. SL, if you are interested stands for "Sports Light."

The only R230 AMGs built were SL55s and SL63s. They had a 5.5 liter supercharged engine which the German's call kompressor or a massive 6.3 NA V8. Your car has the NA 5 liter motor that produces about 302 HP. The stock SL55 engine produces around 496. I don't recall the exact HP of the 6.3.

Here are a couple shots of my SL55. Note the dual sport tips. Also notice the black grille below the bumper. In the second photo, you will see the V8 Kompressor badge. Also, have a look at the size of the rotor and caliper and tell me if they are much bigger than on your car? Also note the black grille in front.

If you really want to know what you have, PM me the VIN and I will ask a friend of mine to pull the original build sheet for you.

I think it sucks that Dealers have the gall to put "AMG" on almost anything. Best of luck with the sale. It is still a special R230.

OP -
You might as well just delete this thread and start over. And just leave AMG out of it!

Thanks to the people who had constructive comments. There are a number of reasons I would not remove the AMG badge:
1. it is original to the car since new.
2. The paintwork behind the badge will not have faded, whereas the rest of the paint will have faded, so removing the badge will certainly leave a mark.
3. Removing it could cause damage.

If the buyer wants to take those risks, by all means go for it.

I do not want any further comments on the badge. If you don't like it, fine, but I don't want or need to hear from you. You are missing the slightly more relevant fact that the car has had $10's of thousands of dealer maintenance and is in near perfect condition, while getting your panties in a bunch about a badge.
Go talk to your dealers and tell them to stop the practice.

I'm sure you DON'T want more comments, but please. You know it isn't an AMG. We know it isn't an AMG.

At least remove it from the title of the thread.

Oh, and to the post saying the only R230 AMG is the SL55 and SL63, don't forget the SL65.

Car has now sold (for full asking price) to the first person who viewed it. He didn't mention the AMG badge.
