I work at Verizon. It's not possible to 'unlock' the phone, as it defaults to CDMA network when it's in the states. It will NOT work on ATT or T-Mobile. If you unlock it, it will likely work outside of the country, though.
If it will default to CDMA but you don't have Verizon, won't it automatically switch to GSM?
On a side note, why would anyone pay $300 for a used Storm if you can get it new from Verizon for $199 with a 2 year commitment?

Cause paying $100 more not to be locked in for 2 more years is a better deal!! I don't know about you but having the same phone for 2 years is to long of a wait.

Negative. The programming is always defaulted to CDMA. It will only switch to GSM if there is no CDMA signal to receive. That said, in this country, VZW's signal will be caught by the phone, and obviously because it's not registered, it will give you the message that the phone can't be authenticated, etc etc.
Ggong, is the phone still available? I have a friend who wanted a Storm, changed their mind for the iPhone, but I can "convert" them back to the Storm.
P.S., if the Storm is unlocked, IT WILL WORK ON AT&T or T-MOBILE. There are many users that use the Storm on other networks besides Verizon.

Yea, I have plenty of proof. It took me 2hrs to complete the Service Book and Network swaps...
I have AT&T and I unlocked the Storm and have been using it for my personal/company use for over a month now.
The Network doesn't automatically switch over to GSM, but you manually move it, and it works fine. You will lose the 3G coverage and only be covered in edge/EDGE network, but I don't mind for the use of the phone.
Great phone, not too hard to make the switch, and COMPLETELY possible to be done.
Enjoy!
