Traded CTT for ML63...kinda long post

Hello,

I've been monitoring this forum since hearing about the ML63 so thought I would share first impressions on my new black/black ML63. Vehicle is the same as EX-BEEMER's except doesn't have Distronic.

I traded in a 2006 Porsche Cayenne Turbo for the ML63. It was the second Cayenne Turbo I've owned in about a year and a half. Yesterday, before I went to the dealer I had absolutely no intentions of buying the ML63 just wanted to "see what the competition was". Sold ! Reasons: 1.) ML63 is more stable and glued to the road and overall is a more polished vehicle than the Cayenne Turbo. 2.) I really like the immediate power vs. the turbo delay of the Cayenne. 3.) The ML63 transmission is extremely responsive but doesn't hunt for gears. (One of the biggest reasons I didn't like the Cayenne was due to extreme lack of responsiveness of the transmission.) When I was driving the ML63 yesterday (for over 300 miles! ) I was on some very remote roads in California between L.A. and Las Vegas, which I've also driven the Cayenne Turbos on and the difference is remarkable....the ML63 felt like a sports car vs the Cayenne's plodding along. The ML63 feels like it has a lower center of gravity than the Cayenne and was able to negotiate the turns with more confidence and stability than the Cayenne and when you press on the gas it GOES vs. the Cayenne has to think about what gear it's going to shift down to (maybe) and then how much throttle to give you before accelerating. Maybe the ML63 is "normal" and I was so impressed by this because of driving the Cayenne for so long

Whew! I'm running out of breath but... some dislikes on the ML63: 1.) Outside rear view mirrors are way too small. 2.) The front seats are great IF you're an "average" sized person. I'm 5'11, 200lbs. and they are excellent but I'm afraid if I gain 20 lbs I'd have to sell the vehicle 3.) Running boards look tacky. (I'm going to have one removed and see how it looks and then decide to leave 'em both off or on) 4.) Nav didn't have a couple of roads in it's database that have been around for over 25 years..not a biggie but...

Oh, and to leave on a positive note: ML63 was about $7K less than the last CTT I bought

Thanks for taking the time to read the long post. I'll update everyone as time goes by.

Welcome aboard Rider1,

The more the better...

Great insights on the ML63 vs. it's #1 competition, the Cayene. I agree with you that these seats will keep me from gaining weight because I enjoy spending time in them too much.

Tastes differ, but I love the running boards because they're different. Not the typical chrome or black nerf bar. And they're very easy to wash and keep clean.

Enjoy and post often!

Ex-Beemer,
How would you compare the front seats in the E55 to the ones in the ML63? I'm 6'1 and 215lbs, I fit snuggly and nicely in the E55, and hopefully be the same in the ML63.

Not to hi-jack the thread but in answer to your question 2MANYCARS, you won't be disappointed. Seats seem just a touch wider at the base than on an E55 but very deeply sculptured. Side bolsters hold you very snugly. For me it's just a little tight at the top, but that'll improve as the seats break in. You don't slide around in these seats.

German...picts of my 63 are posted on my "First Impressions" thread.

Having put 300 miles on my ML 63 I must say I am really enjoying it. I drove the reguar Cayanne and there is no comparison. I assume the turbo is similar in body roll and height. In the ML 63 I feel more grounded with no body roll. I keep it in sport suspension because I like the feel.
The transmission and engine are so in synch and responsive. The paddle shifters are smooth and fast.
One thing I like about this vehicle is that I even though I feel like I am driving on rails I don't worry about bottoming out at every spped bump etc. When I drove a BMW M series I was worried that I would damage the vehicle over speed bumps.

I also really like the looks as does others. It looks mean.

Is there a definative answer yet on a rim and tires for winter??

Regarding rim and snow tires for the ML63: According to the owner's manual...you would need to buy some 19" rims and install 285/45 R19 107V M + S with the snowflake symbol tires. I've had good information from Tire Rack for rims and tires.
