I have an 02 ML55
And my wife drives it for the most part. It's awesome, I've had less issues with it then my 02 C32. And it hauls anything with ease.
I too added the seat to the trunk, but only added 1, as I didn't want to be without the spare, and didn't want to hang it outside.
Only 2 things that actually broke was the window switches...but I think my wife is to blame, she spilled coffee all over the place. The other thing that went wacky, was the rear AC controls, again, I think coffee f-ed it up.
I would say get the 02 or 03, it has the updated mirrors, and one touch window switches are a must in this day and age.
I'm the second owner, car now has 70k miles...still running strong!
