Suspension Question (not limited to ML owners)

My ML63 just recently developed a loud, annoying noise coming from the suspension in cold weather/when the car is still cold. Took it to the dealer, replaced the sway bar links, still had the issue. Took it back, they replaced the drivers side shock claiming they found the problem and it should be taken care of. I'll find out tomorrow morning whether or not it's truly fixed. Assuming it is fixed, is it bad that the vehicle has one new shock in the front and 3 old shocks with 32,000 miles on them? Dealer said it's fine because it has Airmatic and automatically balances itself out. I'm not really buying that answer as that sounds a little fishy so I figured I'd come on here and ask the real experts if that's fine or not.

a friend of mine just recently had a problem with his suspension.. He now needs to replace the "hydropneumatic spring" front left side.. quoted $1500 at dealership.. any place we can get it cheaper?
