My 2001 ML55 AMG (just bought it) seems to be down on power and it seems to have a problem downshifting when I really step on the gas. Also when I floor it and the revs get to about 6K the car seems to be hoover there without upshifting.

I would appreciate any advice on this issue. Is it time to service the transmission or is the answer replacement of a sensor, switch or solenoid?

My 2000 '55' did the same thing last fall. Eventually, the check engine light came on and flagged the p0183 code. I replaced the MAF sensor and the suv came back to life. I would also change your air filter and consider replacing the crank position sensor too, before it leaves you stalled somewhere. The trans is probably just fine.
