Is my 2000 ml55 overheating or need a new thermostat?

I have a 2000 ml55 with 68k miles.... seems when the car is at idle it heats up to just about the 100c mark ..also when going up a hill or sitting in traffic it will do the same regardless of how hot or cold the outside air temp is. Once moving again downhill or otherwise the temp gauge will reduce itself to around the mid mark of 80c ....I had the coolant flushed about a week back hoping it would fix this issue..it didnt.....is my next step to change the thermostat or is this normal ml 55 operation....oh yea, I just bought the vehicle 2 months ago!!! also, when the AC is on is seems to run cooler!! yes..the electric radiator fan comes on before it hits the 100c mark......I
Am I safe to take a 300 mile drive to vegas?

I have the same issue i flushed the coolant and changed the sensor and still not solved the problem so im thinking it could be the thermostat cause the temperature is nearly touching 100 on my dashboard it used to always be 85
