Fuel pump or "delivery unit" question

in September, 2016, I had Mercedes Benz of Encino replace 164-470-11-94 Delivery Unit on my 07 ML63 after a CE light and a stall. $1475 later and I was back on the road. Now, six months later they are telling me it needs a fuel filter after another CE light - this time it will only cost me $1200!

I took it to an independent mechanic for a second opinion. He told me this vehicle has a "lifetime filter" and that it is actually a part of the fuel pump. I have just over 90K miles on the vehicle. Is this true? Is it a "lifetime filter?" And what do they mean by "lifetime?" Is the MB dealer trying to rip me off?

Lastly, I wonder to myself if the filter does need replacement, wouldn't you do it when you do the fuel pump? Seems logical to me.

BTW, the engine codes are 0745, 0749, 2091, and 2095.

Thanks in advance!

Rear right is where your fuel pump delivery unit is located. Within its got the fuel sending and filter integrated. On the left driver side you have the fuel level sender with another integrated fuel filter. So yes the filters are part of the assembly.

Thanks for the info. Is there a place where I could find a diagram of this?

Secondly, if you replace the sending unit, would you not also replace the filter just as a matter of expediency?

Filter is part of the unit itsesf so if you are replacing the unit you are replacing the filter too. You can not just replace the filter because it is not available as a separate part.
