New and mostly clueless

So I made an account mostly at the prodding of a friend of mine who knows enough about my car that I think he's a wizard (read: anything at all) and he tells me I should actually learn how to take care of my car (read: I have no idea what I'm doing).
So here I am!
I currently have a gold 1983 300SD, and I used to have a 1988 300E.
I'm going to try and figure out how to keep it running, and I have zero experience doing anything other than checking/filling the oil and coolant, and my friend showed me how to wipe down the engine and change the oil. Any protips or pointers to must-see maintenance are welcome!

I will definitely refer to those articles and try and get the hang of some of this stuff!
Right now I'm specifically trying to figure out how to replace my vacuum lines. My friend has kindly helped me diagnose that a leak in the vacuum lines is causing a lot of expected issues (and I seem to be missing at least one line).
I didn't see any articles on the vacuum lines in that link, and so far I've found this other thread from 2012 with a link to a manual I might be able to use:
1984-300sd-vacuum-pod-leak-diagnosis.html
However, I've never done anything like this before, so I'm nervous about it. I also am not sure exactly what parts I need to buy. My friend has advised me to get the hoses pre-cut since that will eliminate the chance that I mis-cut them.
Any advice specific to this procedure you can offer? Or what hose lengths I'd need?
