cls switching dip pattern
hi everyone.
I live in france, have done for 13 years-British by birth.
I own an oldtimer W114 as a collectors car. This one is ok,french registered and all good to go.
My daily driver is a RHD CLS 320CDI(I also use a 2002 S class 320 cdi)
Both these cars were sourced in the UK as the equivalent French cars are roughly twice the price.
In order to register the cars in France, part of the process is a 2 yearly "controle technique"-a safety check similar to the uk test or MOT.The S class sailed through a couple of years ago.Since that time the rules have tightened and all imported cars need a "certificate of conformity" before the "CT "test can be done.In the past there was little regard for headlamp dipping pattern irregularities-UK lights dip left as the cars drive on the left carriageway, european cars dip right as they drive on the right side of the road.
" dips a bit high -but its ok"NOW lights must dip right or straight down.
The CLS failed and after much searching on the internet, including forums and the local MB main dealer workshop, all concluded that the light units must be replaced with european pattern ones-the originals couldnt be altered
Bit the bullet-274€ EACH from Oscaro.fr.(and that was way cheaper than most suppliers-£1000 each for a friends Range Rover)
When they arrived, imagine my surprise when I removed the bulb holder cover,to find that there was in fact a lever to the side of the bulb which moved up or down alters the dip pattern from right to left and vice versa.
Lights altered,CT successful, headlights returned to supplier for a refund.
I hope this helps other owners whether you drive on the left or the right
ps replaced the original bulbs with 120% brighter halogen bulbs from halfords in the UK-£35 the pair.HUGE DIFFERENCE_RECOMMENDED
