Hello. Sold my 1988 420 SEL last month but took possession of this 1997 SL500 a few days go. I was looking for a not-too-far-gone project car and now I have one. The car has 129K, a scanty service record, enough previous owners to form a club, and one key. Apart from replacing fluids, filters, plugs, hoses, etc, known problems requiring immediate attention include a leaky water pump, a misfire and brittle, cracked air intakes. The top hydraulics are predictably faulty. I knew about these issues prior to buying the car, but I negotiated the price way down to offset a decent portion of the anticipated repairs. I like restoring order, but restoration is not my goal--gradually returning the car to good running and cosmetic condition seems more realistic.
Body and paint good--has been garaged. Hardtop headliner hangs down like a curtain. Top hydraulics = 2 cylinders leaking.
Interior good, not greatPassenger seat has split at one seam.
PO installed a 1200W amp--and cut the antenna and rewired a lot of the trunk. Will need advice on extracting this thing.
