Techiejs checking in
Hi all.
2006 CLS 500 owner. Little story why I chose my CLS. I test drive the BNW, Audi and Cadillac, all similar engine class. When I sat in the CKS 500 cockpit, I was a enamored. The dealer let me take it home over night (smart fella) in an extended rest drive. The following day I made the purchase.

Thanks! I love love love this car. But, I just got it back from my trusted mechanic and he's telling me the transmission needs replacing. Everything else in the car is top shape (for a 130k mile vehicle) - but a rebuilt transmission will cost me ~$11k. That knocked me off my chair. When asked I would like to go the used transmission route, I was told that it had to be rebuilt because of my year and model requires a new "interface plate" to be programmed with the vehicle's VIN. But I see a lot of "used 2006 CLS 500 transmission" for sale without any information about this interface plate. Doing a search only on this transmission interface plate or any information as to why it's needed, etc. comes up zero (that's how I found mbworld.org).
I'll look for proper place in forums to post this question to see if anyone can coach me on what I can or cannot do. I'm thinking if I get a rebuild kit and get the current transmission rebuilt without having to go through the hassle, and cost, of installing a rebuilt transmission with this new un-programmed interface plate, I'd be able to keep her.
Thanks all!
