Just joined. First Mercedes was a 1962 rattletrap with 155k miles. I bought it used in 1977 as a kid. Then years later an 1984 S class I bought in 1987. Cupla more here and there and then Iin 2020 bought used 2019 s class.

Well, yesterday I bought the 2024 s580e. I thought I was kind of a Mercedes mini-expert, but, well, I feel like an absolute moron-beginner driving this car. I keep reading about "incremental changes" from year to year but oh my! The difference between my 2019 S560 and this thing is like going from a Model T to piloting an airplane. (I wanted this car as I am a bit of an environmentalist and a LOT against BIG oil and the Saudi's and since I mostly commute, knew this would be my little way of making a (mini)-statement. )

The ride? The old one that I considered smooth as silk, rode like a donkey cart in comparison. The old one that I considered whisper-quiet seems like riding in an open-air jeep in comparison to the new one. The new one is so very quiet, so hushed that I have several times pushed the button turning it off thinking it was not on yet.

The velvet ride is so comfortable, smooth and quiet, I think I might need to use the Starbucks app a lot to keep awake.

The times of us having to repeat direction verbally into the NAV over and over, enunuciating carefully again and again and then giving up and putting it in manually (as with the 2019) are over. We pretty much speak in a normal fast voice, and 2024 grabs it immediately.

The bells and whistles are complicated as the dickens, so don't ask me about them yet. I have only had the car for three days. Some are intuitive and easy. Most are easy once you figure them out. Some I just cannot figure out yet.

Now, the "iffy". When It est drove it there was a warning light on it. Salesman said don't worry just glitch, will get it removed when you pick it up (he did). Upon delivery the next day, when I noticed the button to pull down the back headrests for clearer vision was wonky. The right one goes down maybe an inch (Why bother?) and the left one doesn't go down at all. 2) I have not had the pleasure of driving it in electric mode since it won't seem to charge in my house the charger looks like it is working when I plug it in, but the next morning, the charger is off, and there is no "Charge" on the car. 3) IS it supposed to charge while you drive it? We have only taken it on a few short 15-mile trips, but there is no charge on the battery after driving this short time. 4. It is onlyin the upper 70's here but the A/C was set at "60" when I picked it up and it does not really freeze me out at that setting. We of course set it to 73 but it seems warm in the car. 5) Lastly, the most annoying, is the "Thumb" mouse on the left side of the steering wheel is wonky AF ... way different than the same button on the 2019 and the whole "wave you hand" (motion controls) seem to not work for me at all.

Of course some of this may be "user error" as I get used to the changes from 2019 to 2024 but some of them I am a bit apprehensive about. Any thoughts or suggestions welcome (or mild insults) andIwill be positn if there is interest further delights and issues.

So far, overall, very impressed with the car. (oh and the augmented reality? The biggest letdown...maybe there is an adjustment??)

Hi @watchdude and welcome to MBWorld. Thanks for the introduction. Looks like you need some assistance from the dealer or an afternoon with the owner’s manual! Please post some photos when you get a moment. All the best with it 👍

update: After 3 days 2 unusual error codes came up and I arranged a service visit. Before my appointment another 5 or 6 error messages sprang up.."unable to charge", "emergency brake not operable" , "don't park on a hill" "heads up display inoperable" and one "park your car now and call service".

With less than 100 miles on the car, I had them pick it up, and 9 days later, they told me they had to order some parts from Germany, and the parts would be here within 2 to 3 weeks. I loved the car but........

I gave them back the car, and they found me another... not the cool black one ..but a white one..but I love this one too.... it has also had some oddities in error messages but nothing too major. the "three dots" thing pops up thrice weekly. A hragin error once. And once i had to uber to work because the level 2 charging cord would not come out no matter how many times /I locked and unlocked it. i called the dealer and they said "bring it in". I was like, "Shall drive to you after I drag the cord out of the wall? Dangling all the way over there behind my car?" That night, when I got home, it had"fixed itself," and it came out smoothly. No issues since. (I saw online this is a known issue, and you must just "walk away from the car for 20 minutes and then lock and unlock three times" and also found online that a manual release is somewhere on the car..why could Mercedes not have told me that?)

I love this car, though. After reading reviews, I see that the odd error messages and occasional "computer glitches" are "normal" for this incredibly engineered car. I have had it for almost a month with zero stops at a gas station, and the ride and comfort are unparalleled.

I also had a thing where when I plugged in the charger , I would lock the car and a loud fan noise would come on. The car was not running. But when I plugged in the car and then locked it, the loud noise from the front would commence... a fan noise.. when I unlocked it, the fan noise would dissapear.

But do I love my car in spite of all this? Yes. Would I spend 140k again? Yes. Do I have faith and confidence in Mercedes to update the software and fix any major problems that arise? Yes. Am I naive?

Jeff. (loves my 580e)
