If the car had a ski-bag or a fridge, you would actually have an opening (with two doors) from the cabin to the trunk at the middle of the rear seat backrest (behind the armrest).

I went to Germany and watched them build a W221 and I was shocked at how many computer boards and components are attached to the back of the rear seat. Someone , I can't remember who, had photos posted of some of the internal guts of our cars. Computers are all over the place. I thought it was AsianML that posted this....I may be totally wrong.
Yep, you're right. I do remember it was associated with the designo interior thread. Sorry about that.

I've seen many many many S-Class vehicles with a multitude of different subwoofer placements/installations and options. It's just up to you to find the place that makes you COMFORTABLE with taking apart your car and putting it back together.
Some installers do a fantastic job of wiring/labeling/installing the components and hiding them and some botch the trunk up. It can be ultra-clean (meaning you won't even see the woofers or notice that much of the trunk was touched) or elaborate (meaning lights/mirrors/floating amps/subs all over the place).
Pick the right place and you WILL NOT be let down. I wasn't.
