I have an s500l that has a fantastic spec and very low mileage (sub 20,000) so I have no intention of changing the car anytime soon but I have a third child on the way who will need to sit exactly where the rear seat entertainment control console and DVD player is. The NTG3.5 allows you to pipe video from the front head unit to the rear screens.
I also want the media interface because the standard iPod integration kit is pretty pants and I want to be able to use full postcodes to enter navigation destinations in the uk. But these are secondary considerations. The need to be able to provide my two young kids with entertainment in the rear is the primary goal.

Looks original and have built in DVD player. Then they can play what ever they want.
Looking back to your first question I have observed (rather than researched) the following functional differences between an NTG3 and NTG3.5 in a 2011 S500l in the UK.
The NTG 3.5 HDD is 40GB vs 20GB
You can control the rear entertainment system from the front head unit
Including piping video from the front DVD changer to the rear screens
You can fit the media interface. This allows you to control the iPod using the secondary COMAND screen and the dial controller in the central console. Crucially this displays whole lists of songs or playlists or menu options rather than one entry at a time.
The system has a stored GraceNote database for song data.
Navigation allows you to search 7 character post (zip) codes rather than the first 5 characters only which is as good as useless since it gets you to the town/village only
The map displays branded symbols for fuel stations rather than a generic pump symbol
The linguatronic seems improved - better able to recognise whole words rather than requiring you to spell them
The menu structures seem a bit better thought through
The PCMCIA slot is lost in favour of an SD card slot
It's just a bit more of a polished offering all around.

- Head unit
- Split screen monitor
- Wiring
- Possible cluster change
- Programing with SDS
and a look at the wiring diagram you will see that the wires are different as well.
If you find a solution I am very intrested though as well. One thing I like with the old one though is that you can watch DVD while you are driving and Navi still works. If you add that module to the new one the Navigation dont work wile watching DVD. The size of the harddisc have no importens. Dont see why?

Real time traffic changed from using RDS data broadcast by FM radio stations to Sirius which requires a paid monthly subscription. RDS is free in the US for our vehicles for life. Also map updates require the purchase of an encryption code which is unique for each VIN number and map version. This precludes loading a new map DVD on multiple vehicles.

much appreciated
