California cracking down on mods...
Obviously this applies for everybody in Nor-Cal and So-Cal that are into modding their cars (aka enthusiasts).
For those of you that aren't in Cali., don't feel left out because this is with regards to the new, more strict laws that are going to be enforced in California with regards to performance mods on vehicles.
I can understand why they are cracking down to stop "street" racing, but to go to this extent is a little ridiculous:

Most notable quote from this article:
Drivers of stock vehicles that come from the factory with some of the characteristics of modified cars have experienced harassment under this provision. One such motorist complained on an enthusiast website that the Calfiornia Highway Patrol was using these programs to make "driving while Asian" a crime, pointing out that the department's own website has several pages dedicated to Asian involvement in street racing and "vehicle modification."
Long list of illegal mods.

california has alot of strict motor vehicle codes, especially for illegal modifications. Most are "fix It" tickets, which require the offender to fix the modification at their own expense, then take it to the california highway patrol to inspect and sign off on the offense. the majority of "fix it" tickets are usually limited to colored light bulbs, modified exhaust, window tint, lowering. I believe some cities are now passing ordinances that consider lowered cars to be a moving violation.
i got a fix it ticket before for modified exhaust, cost me only a few bucks for the swap to my stock exhaust and the 10 dollars to the CHP, but it was more so the inconvience.

California is way behind in cracking down on illegal mods. Maryland and other states that require bi-annual safety inspections have been doing it for years. If this doesn't do somethign to lower the stereo and exhaust noise and eliminate the blinding purple lights, periodic inspections are the next step.
As for profiling, if it helps solve the problem, why not? Is a 70 year old in a new MB a good target for CHP time or the Asian/Latino/PWT in the riced out Honda?
If you can't do the time, don't do the cime.

Anyways, this crackdown is a good thing, now only if they'd be able to do the same thing on older cheaper cars. It's horrible to be driving on the freeway through blue smoke..!

Love you too Ricky.
I used to work for a trucking company several years ago. We would get reported all the time in every state. Most were from idot tree huggers becasue our fleet was state of the art and one of the first to be computer controlled. Smoke was NEVER a problem.

I don't think amg owners need worry.
It would be pretty hard for a cop to look under the hood of an amg with a pulley kit and chip and the sl splitter and say your car is modded. I think the law was made for the spatering rice cars with stupid crap on them.

I really hope that they actually enforce the law with respect to ridiculously lifted trucks and don't just take it out on the ricers and euros...

Blue and yellow headlights. Headlights must be white - blue and yellow are illegal (24011 VC). Look for the DOT symbol on the bulb and package.
Headlights brighter or higher wattage than those from the factory. You may be able to see better, but the lights are illegal (24011 VC).

Exhaust systems which meet smog requirements but are still too loud. Exhaust equipment that states it is, "Legal in all 50 states," refers to smog, not noise.
Note: New law (27150.2 VC) does not require law enforcement to use sound level meters to test for excessive noise. Citation is based on officer's judgment. Cited violators may have testing done at smog referee stations or may be directed by the court to have testing done. Vehicles in violation must be brought into compliance. A fine may also be imposed.

This law by not requiring a sound lever meter is very unfair. A CHP could give you a ticket purely because they don't like you. These laws are such BS. And like Josh says the laws mention nothing about the extremely lifted trucks. Which IMO is much more of a danger to the road then lowered cars. These laws were written up for one reason to make money for the state prue and simple not to protect public safe.

If you are legal, go to court and show it. If you are not, pay the price and stop your whining.

I would really like to see more effort going into getting unsafe vehicles off the road. I dont think it's as bad in CA, but in TN there are contantly trucks and trailers with no rear lights and/or stuff flying out of the back that make travel a real hazzard. The ricers don't bother me, at least those cars are maintained!!

i agree with JoshK.....they should definitely apply the law to those annoyingly stupid lifted trucks......not only are they a hazard, they never aim there headlights down appropriately after a lift, have loud borla exhaust, mud tires that whine like crazy, and they dont put on the splash/mud guards to keep from spraying everyone elses car, but they also drive pretty damn crazy tailgating you ...just cuz they can......if ur gonna target modded vehicles....gotta be fair and hit the lifted trucks too....(they probably wont...cuz most cops probably have lifted trucks....and just admire them than ticket them instead...and profiling them would include profiling pple like thenselves)

Just to let everybody know, they've already started instituting these policies up in Sacramento.
My cousin who owns an EVO VIII MR knows several of his fellow message board members that have gotten ticketed for aftermarket mods already and have had to get their cars inspected.
Now, granted they have EVO's vs. a Benz, but it may be something as small as an aftermarket exhaust that'll make a police officer suspicious.
Definitely can't stand some of these laws (especially if it's not necessarily keeping the streets "safer").

Owning 2 civics before i can say that when a modified honda is modified in the right way, it is just as safe as a stock one. But, those morons who chop their springs in 1/2 and put a 4 foot tall chrome wing on that bad boy are just asking for trouble. In hawaii there is a reconstruction permit for modified vehicles, basically similar to a smog ref, but for engine mods and exterior and suspension. there should be something like that in california to distinguish the cars that are well maintained from the ghetto rice with altezzas. just my 2 cents from the civic side of things.
