universal air filters

got this idea from a fellow board member's car.

does anyone know if it is a good idea to remove the airbox, get a k&n universal air filter and fit a pipe? Is this a good idea? I have a 99 e430 and besides a dropin replacement, i don't know of anyother options? Are there any?

Yes, it's a good idea as long as 1) you locate this filter where it can suck in as much outside air as it needs, 2) you don't put in a place where it will get wet, 3) you attach it securely so it doesn't fall off.

There's a lot more to it. Length, flow, pressure, heat, etc.

ben are you suggesting that i stick with a drop in? are there any alternatives?

buellwinkle, if i keep it secured, dry and far away from the engine as possible, will i notice better performance than a drop in?

It's tough to say. A CAI would be best, however there currently aren't any available. Making your own could yield very positive results, or it could be negative.

On my car, a C230 coupe, I got 5.9hp more by not having any air filter vs. the factory filter. The theory would be that if you did not restrict airflow at all I would gain that much power. Never tried it beyond that. What's funny is that one of the leading CAI companies, AEM, uses a smaller diameter (about 2 1/2") to speed the airflow and that's their secret for getting even more power than no filter.

Here's a thread that was interesting...

2001 ML 430
I don't mean to be overly repetitive with this post and content but I have been interested in a performance airintake system for my ML 430 and other than RENNTech's $2,500 intake, I have found goose egg. I agree that with the technology invlolved in an MB motor, anything that has not been specifically designed for the application is just guess work. I have contacted a group in Southern CA http://macperformance.com that says if there is enough interest in an air intake product for ML 430 or other 430 MB automobiles that they would do a prototype. Their typical units for american auto run about $140/unit. If there is any interest, please email to MAC [info@macperformance.com] and let them know.
