I have looked at various headers for V-8 Mercedes, and the prices tend to be several thousand dollars -- and up. I looked at ostensibly similar headers for Camaro/SB Chevy V8 in the Jegs catalog, and there were several brands (similar to our situation), with prices of painted headers being about $375, ceramic coated headers about $450, and stainless steel the most expensive at $525. The prices for several vendors were about the same -- Hooker, Hedman, etc. Are we simply being gouged again and paying $2,000 - $4,000 for SS headers that should be selling for $500?

I've got a set of VRP shorty headers for sale. They're plug and play, bolting directly to your OEM downpipe. PM me if you're interested.

You must keep in mind that market that the product is sold to after it is developed. The market for an american muscle car is much much larger then a mercedes AMG vehicle.
so you need to factory in the cost of R&D, fabication and materials over the number of units that are projected to be sold. If the development cost lets say for a round number is $10,000 and you expect to sell lets say 50 sets. You must factory in a development cost is $200 per set. however if you know that you will be selling lets say 500 units then your development cost per unit is now down to $20.
Then you factory in the profit margins, advertising and the actual cost of the unit starts to rise. You also need to keep in mind, that advertising the in the european market is at a premium over the American market.

You will see more of the prices dropping as more people get into the market. The tuning prices are going to drop quite a bit in the next year. You can already see it. There are many aftermarket manufacturers looking to expand their markets beyond Ford/GM/Dodge. I feel ya on the header prices. I can have Kooks headers make me a one off set for less than some of prices out there. I think $1200-1800 for stainless headers is realistic for good quality stuff. There are some guys under $2k right now so we are on the right track. The prices though on many other items have been going down since I purchased my E55 a few months ago.

I don't know about $500. I paid $1695 for my C6 Z06 headers last year plus $300 for 3 HFC so that is like $2000. The headers that I purchased were made by www.lgmotorsports.com
