cheap 10hp perfomance upgrade!
I rememeber a thread a while back about someone saying that they put reflective tape onto the underside of the airbox to reflect the engine heat away somewhat. And that it reduced the incoming air temp. which as a result make the air more dense, denser air will ulitmately give more hp, etc ,etc.
well i tried this experiment and it cost me $10. I made a video charting my impromptu experiment. i know it very unscientific but it looks promising and you have nothing to lose.
both ways show 9 degree increase, yet with the tape, the air was always about 20 degrees colder.
ps. yes i know it wasnt moving so incoming air would be cooler, but it goes to show the heat soak versus reflectability aspect nonetheless. either way i had fun doing it :-)

I am sorry I could not read the air temps from your Video, could you post the numbers?
Also if you make some Phenolic insulation spacers to be placed between the intake manifold and the cylinder head you will see some very large drops in air temps.
My C280 went from having the manifold too hot to touch after a hard drive to being able to hold your hand down on the warm manifold after the phenolic spacers. My infared temp gun showed temps drops of from 30-40 degrees F.
I guess I need to do both methods on my C43.

I really hate to be a pest but I can't view video's because I use a linux machine. Any chance you could grab some of the key stills and do a small write up?
What kind of tape? Thermal or reflective?

It's like a marriage though, I have had this machine since 97' and I just can't dump it.
Edit--
needs gcc3

i got a lot of interest in the OBII reader so I put up some pics at
http://161.58.248.45/cgi-local/ultim...c;f=3;t=000061
And its from Auterra, only about $200
More importantly, no one has addressed the pith of this thread. Does it look like it makes sense and helps out with hp improvement?
