Crank Yankers

Woohooo... cranks are in. Engine build has begun. I am truly psyched and wanted to share this picture of the crankshaft:

Evosport is turning my car into a 6.3 liter supercharged CLK. The engine had to bored, sleeved and all new components had to be custom manufactured to handle the projected 650-700 hp output. The cranks were the last engine component we were wating for. It is not a stock MB crank.

Cool, and where in the Bay Area can you street test the result? And whenever you have a modification job done, it would void your MB warrantee, right? How long would Evosport going to garrantee their work?

I drove my CLK when it had 500 hp all over the Bay Area. Particularly on 280. I plan to do the same when it gets back, however, I will also send it to the track now and then. It will primarily be a weekend driver. Not all modifications void warranties, however, given that almost every aspect of my CLK is being modified, I'm not going to be trying to bring it in for warranty service. Depending on the product Evopsort is selling, their warranty will vary. As for my car, I have a unique and very trusting reltionship with Evosport so I'm not particularly concerned. If something breaks down, I'll work with them to get it fixed. Nevertheless, a ton of R&D is going into my car to make sure it is reliable and completley streetable.

Rears are going up front. I'm not sure how fat we'll be able or want to go, but defintely fatter. The rear rims will probably be 11.5 (or wider) BBS LMs.

It is amazing that crankshafts can handle all that power and still look so thin and fragile at the same time.

engine should be built in about 3 weeks. I figure 6 - 8 weeks for completion of the entire car, although there are quite a few things left to be done. Pictures will be posted as the project progresses.

My car has been at Evosport for a year being converted into a 6.3 liter supercharged CLK. Almost every aspect of the car is being modified including all engine components, transmission, suspsension, ECU, exterior, interior, etc.

Wow, you gotta post some pictures after you get it back. Also, did all these modifitations you are doing cost as much as another CLK?

Yes. Money is not really the issue for me. We've got a bunch of MBs in my family. I happen to love the W208's aesthetics and wanted to turn it into an over-the-top performer. It's definitely not for everyone. With this kind of project, you can never expect to recoup your money. It's just about digging a particular MB, trusting and liking a company (Evosport) enough to hand the project over to them, and having a weekend driver MB that will destroy just about anything on the road.

I think the CLK is overall the most balance of the coupe lineup. CL is a bit too big and the SLK is pretty small. Glad that you will have one of the kind CLK and make sure you take a lot of pictures afterward. Good luck and enjoy.

Thanks for the kind words. Many pictures will be posted. I hope I can make other W208 owners proud with my tribute to the W208 CLK.

Did you guys look at keeping it Normally Asperated? Since you are going to 6300cc you could get about 600-650 Hp on a NA motor with a full header and a 7500 rpm limit.

Look at the Engine Master Challenge run at Popular Hot Rod. They had a buildup contest, 365cubic inch motors, 91 octane fuel and the winner achieved 608Hp, with a ton of torque.

Anyhow food for thought for others interested in that sort of thing.

Jeff
