Doesn't your car have thermostatically controlled electric fans?

Yes two small fans.. in the front.. that usally turn on when the AC is on... but there is a real fan connected to the belts... The fan looks like a normal fan.. a buddy of mine has a mustang and I helped him install this spiecal fan on it.. I think it was called FLEX FAN.. I wonder if I can put one on my car....

Are you having an overheating problem? My advice is to stay away from flex fans. They do work as claimed but they also tend to explode after the material is weakened with use. I saw one put a nasty $400 hole in the radiator of my brother's '69 442.

We tried a flex fan on a short track stock car over 20 years ago. The results were, uh, less than optimal. Don't waste your money.

I see. Don't waste your time or money on the fan. There are dozens of things you can do to your Benz that will give you a better bang for your buck. Things like...

1. Performance chip
2. Tires/wheels
3. Lighted door sills
4. Exhaust mod
5. Body kit
6. etc.

I have a flex fan on my 442. No matter what I did before I added the fan, the big block would always overheat in the FL sun with or without the A/C on. The fan is much louder than the stock fan, but it works. If the stock fan works, don't change it.

actually if he frees up the engine having to turn the fan then he should regain some hp to the wheels. as long as the fan he replaces it with flows the same cfm then he should have no problems

A couple of things are affecting your performance in hot weather.

Firstly, the timing on your engine is retarded above 100 C, water temp, as much as 10%.

Secondly the viscous fan attached to water pump has a flex coupling that only locks up in air temperatures over 85F, when it locks up it takes 15 hp to run the fan.

Thirdly the auxiliary fans in front of the car only come on at 110 C water temp, (and when the a/c is on) by which time you could have lost 30-40 hp in losses.

I have a switch on my 500E that kicks the auxiliary fans in at 95 C.
I think your car has the same injection system so the switch should fit. It is completely automatic, completely hidden, costs about $25 and can be installed in a couple of minutes.

Also, get a pair of Spal electric fans, with an adjustable themostat, I'm sure two 13" will fit in your car, the car will run cooler and you will have more horsepower. I have a single 16" Spal fan, it works great

Cheers
