I need to re-do my blanket and tapes, since it was just for testing I did a slappy job. Once I do it I'll dyno my car again
I dynoed it on 4/23/02:
272.6 RWHP @ 5800 rpm
284.7 RQ Torque @ 4850
Dyno was from 4850 rpm to 6100 rpm (this is exactly when the rev limiter hits)

Great idea - we will do some dyno work before and after on that!

I just ordered std air box yesterday. Comes with airfilters. (only way iy can be ordered).
I will do dyno with both box's. I have dyno results but that is with Unichip, exhaust system and airbox. Shows approx 50hp increase over std.

So what is the verdict on adding the heat shield to the airbox? Anyway significant gains based on before and after dyno results and track times? I am interested in adding this heat shield to my C43.

Thanks,
Baron

It works, it is in fact worth about 8 HP, or 2 tenths on the quarter mile. i haven't dynoed the car again since I hadn't been working, but it does work. And it is a very easy and cheap mod.

Intake obstruction?

Why is the passenger side intake inlet covered by the grille? Is it like this on everyones? I will take pics as soon as I can and post.

Both sides are actually either covered by the grill, or have something else preventing the air from entering through the grill.

Maybe this is a stupid question, but would dremeling out the "obstruction" help airflow?

Yes it would but I'd not want too take the risk of sucking too much water under heavy rain, which is probably why those covers are there. Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong because I've been temped to cut the off

I fully understand your concerns pocholin, but the grille obstruction only covers on side, the drivers side is free of the restriction. I will definitely get some pics soon to show you guys what mean.

Dremel!

I took all obstructions out with the tool. I cut the tabs at the mouth of the intake all the way to the opening, and also drilled out the 3 sections on the grille upper corners that are blocked off. Buff it off with light sanding. Be sure to stuff the intake with rags before naking the mess.
( I don't drive the car in rain so I'm not worried about water...)

Thanks for the feedback guys. Thats the one I was talking about techbike, the one at the upper grille corner, I will be removing that immediately!!! What else did you remove in your intake, and have you seen any noticable improvement in performance?

It's tough to say if there is an improvement. The car's got so much power to begin with, it's hard to tell. Between the K&N filter and that, I KNOW it's gulping in more air. Also as I said, I took off the tabs at the mouth of the intake tubes as well. I also put a sheet of Thermotec under the airbox to shield it from the engine block heat; in effect, cooler air. Well, I do notice an improvement in high speed acceleration; as in going from 60 to 90MPH. It feels so responsive and quick now. So ram air MUST play a part in that. More importantly, there was not an adverse effect, and it made ME feel better about letting the car breathe better! It was a good way to spend a rainy afternoon.

Techbike.. I also took the pieces that are blocking the air in the corners of the grill.. I took out four on both sides,But what tabs are you talking about at the inlet of the intake? I have a CLK55 I guess they are the same as the E55?

If you trace the intake tubes to the front of the bay, you'll see that the mouth has tabs on the insides and the bottoms; as an attempt to direct more air from the front of the car. Since most of that path is blocked, it would stand to reason that air would have to be sucked in from the sides. So I just took those side tabs off.

FYI, PIC of Renntech Airbox

I am thinking about getting Renntech's ECU and Carbon Fiber Upgrade for my E55. However, the costs are very, very high. Attached is pic of the carbon fiber airbox. It looks like it also has different or straigther intake tubes?

The ECU and the airbox are sold as a package. The ECU is $1995. If the air box was sold seperately, it would be $2500. But, if bought with the ECU the package, then $3495 all together. Too pricey for me.

I am not very familiar with your car or engine, so I have no suggestions on how you can modify your airbox (like I did with my E55). However, if you do put a heat barrier around your airbox, you might want to us Thermo tec's adhesive heat barrier (http://www.thermotec.com/tt/adhesive.html) and wrap the intake pipes with the adhesvie backed heat barrier "tape size" (http://www.thermotec.com/tt/shield.html). I hope that helps. Good luck!
