RON Ratings and their effect
I've got a new SLK350 on order in the UK, and I note it uses standard 95 RON unleaded.
I recall my previous SLK responded well to RON 98+ (Shell Optimax petrol, actually!), giving noticeably more torque and making it quieter at cruising speed. the car apparently being able to retard its ignition (is that correct?) automatically based on its engine mapping chip thingummy.
does anyone have any figures re the effect of using Optimax RON 98+ on the performance figures of the SLK350???
shell pr people say around 5% increase in performance.... that would be a quarter second off the 0-60 then. all for an extra few pence at the pump.
has anyone had any solid evidence of these effects, or is it just a "placebo" effect working on my mind.
and all those people who got an amg .... well it uses RON 98 as standard to achieve those performance figures, so unless you get racing additive the cheapest upgrade may not be available.
