K and N filters: Any reason not to use them?
Just had a Renntech stage 1 kit installed last week, but the wrong K and N filters were sent. Shop is waiting for new ones. There seems to be some controversey about these? Any reason I would not want to use them? Will my dealer know what to do when I bring the car in for service?

A lot of times, the oil used to coat the filter and make it pick up the dirt gets sucked into the the intake port and can coat the MAFS wire causing misreadings and a fault code. I know the AMG 5,5 does not use MAFS, so it may not be an issue on those engines though. In all honesty, I have found no difference in performance with the K&N filters in place of the stock units, only more fault codes show up.

You clean and re-oil them every 50,000 miles. K&N sells a "Re-Charge Kit" for about $10 to accomplish this.
It is easy enough to do yourself, however, mechanics can do it as well.
The thing is that you don't want to over oil them, which is a common problem and can cause your Mass Air Flow sensor to fail.

If you do decide to go with K&N, I would heavily advise you to try to suck up some of the oil on the new filter before installing. I have seen many new filters cause MAFS issues in BMWs. Try to soak up some of the oil with a dry paper towel of some sort. Hope this helps.

i also have never had any probs with k/n filters. JUST DONT OVER OIL THEM. go to k.n website and it will tell you how much oil to place on the filter. is what i do is oil the top of the filter and then stand it up and let gravity do its job, the oil will distribute evenly.

I don't have any problems with the filter either. Before I install the filters I did let it sit in open air for 1 day and soak it lightly with paper towel.

When I get a new K&N filter I take it out and spray Simple Green on it and wash it real well. Then I let it dry and lightly spray the oil on the filter and I mean lightly. About 1/3rd of what oil would be on the filter as seen when purchased new.
This has worked well for many car and trucks and still maintaining good filtering.
