Cam question pls..

I heard that if you add aftermarket cams on your ride it won't be SMOG legal anymore? Is this true or can someone confirm this? Kleemann what do you think? Thoughts and comments are welcome.

Thanks

Err how many times have I told you over IM that I'm just joking? Geez I do that to many friends on here. Not like you don't joke back, saying my rims cost more than my car, etc. It's called JOKING.

You knew that and was fine with it, until couple weeks ago when you flaked on the meet. I wasn't even the one that flamed you. It was the others. I only posted at the end because I saw you lying. Wasted a trip out there when nobody showed. Then suddenly came a nasty PM from you. Don't be taking it out on me for that. I didn't make you miss it, I didn't make you not post about it, and I certainly didn't make you lie.

You need to chill out.

dude i can understand jokes and all but sometimes you do cross the line. And why do you keep saying i flaked? Just don't understand that part? You said you wasted a trip? Wtf? You said you just happened to be in that area anyway for a client or something like that? Now who's lying? Am i wrong? So what does it matter if i was not able to show up? Again you said you just happen to be in the area and you're name is not even listed of attendees (but that's besides the point). Nasty PM? lol Not even nasty man. I just said thanks for understanding. So i wasn't able to show up and you kept annoying me by saying i flaked out. Why don't you put yourself in my shoe and see if something like that happens. A true friend will understand that but for some reason you just can't let it go.

back on topic: I heard that if the cams are too aggresive that the engine idle will be rough. Any info on that?

Are shrick, kleemann, or brabus cams not that aggressive, so idle seems normal?

All I know Brabus cams idle smooth as silk...... ..Other cams I don't know... ..Most likely it have to idle smooth because it on the Benz.... ..All I could say it will idle smooth than BMW or Honda... ....I never see a rough idle Benz before unless something wrong with it.. ...

Ok so going back to my original question. Are certain aftermarket CAMS smog legal or no? Which ones are legal and which ones are not?

Thanks

Cams that give you a rough idle, do this because of the valve overlap and duration that is built into the camshaft.

Overlap = The amount of times in degrees that both intake and exhaust valves stay open. Overlap is good for high RPM motors

Duration = The amount of time in degrees that either the intake or the exhaust valve opens BTDC and stays open. The higher the duration the better for high RPM motors.

Valve lift = How much the valves will open in inches.

All of this is critical to a grind but can very easily be overdone. Slight increase in duration and moderate lift will do these motors justice to much of either and you will get spanked by a Honda.

Thank you all who've responded to my question. After talking with Kleemann it looks like the advantage of the cams are really only in mid to higher rpms. As far as idling and sound it's the same as stock. So i think the smog issue is hopefully not going to be a problem.

thanks again!
