Why no "gif" images allowed for sig/avatar

I've seen others on this forum with gif images in there signature and their avatar but wnen I try to change mine to one I get a msg "you may not upload animated images". ? It's not a post count thing because I've seen others w/equal or less posts w/these gif's.
(same thing w/"html" code in posts-turned "off") Thanks

You can link to .gif images.
You just can't upload them to the server.

So upload it to www.imageshack.us or another hosting utility of your choice, and link to it from there.

Unfortunately not

Yes, that's true for the body of a message. However it doesn't work for an avatar or signature that I can see. (where you enter a URL to the gif results in the same no can do message.) And if I try to enter a image link directly into the signature box, that doesn't display anything but the text.
What am missing here please ?

Ok, got the sig to work w/an img code, but still don't see it for an avatar.

Avatar won't work, unless it's resized.

gifs should work for avatars...

Thanks to you both, I do understand the resize restriction @ 65x65 and the image I'm trying to use is 64X47 (2KB).
But when I try to save /upload this is the next screen I get:

The second image is the bottom of the signature edit page-notice red circled item re NO gif's. Possibly this is applying to avatars as well ?

Those rules listed on the signature page do not apply to the avatars.

You are getting an error message when you upload a properly sized avatar in the avatar section?

Yes, that is the message in the first image, in the post above, trying to upload a properly sized gif in the avatar section.

I cleared out your avatar settings just in case, effectively reseting that portion of your account.

Try again and let me know what happens, also can you give me the description of the avatar you are trying to upload (pixel size/dimensions as well as kilobyte size?)

Gif is an American flag 61x45 pixels , 2KB in size ( tried others as well approx the same size.) Still the same message that I "may not upload animated images". Ok, too muich time spent on this already, not a priority at this point so let's just forget it. Thanks anyway.

Edit : maybe the image has to be perfectly rectangular, ie 65X65 ?
