Fuel tank size?

Now that the cosmetic appearances of the vehicle have been discussed to death, down to real questions. (Personally, I buy vehicles because I need to drive them and they need to suit a purpose. I don't care TOO much what it looks like. Besides, when around the car, I'm INSIDE it, and don't see the outside too much... so what the interior looks like is most important.)

HOW BIG IS THE FUEL TANK? Since it is being positioned as a tourer, and that's one of my goals (to tour long distances relatively quickly), how far can it go on a tank? A 16 gallon tank in my CLK55 only gets me 250-300 miles on the highway. A 20 gallon tank in my E55 only gets me 250-300 miles on the highway. A 25 gallon tank in my G500 only gets me 220-250 miles on the highway. None of these is acceptable really for long term cruising. It really equates to only 3 hours driving. The answer is NOT to get a smaller engine, the answer is to have a bigger fuel tank! A 25 gallon tank in the E55 would be good. Two 25 gallon tanks in the G500 would be more appropriate.

Any ideas on the R-class?

The specs I saw on the tank size was in Liters.

Tank capacity/Reserve 80/13

I'm no metric ace but that would seem to equate to 20+/2+ US Gallons.

If you want range, consider a diesel. I get 500 miles out of the ML400 CDI with a tank size of 22 gallons (83 liters) and figure the R320 CDI should be similar or better. Even with full speed on the autobahn (220 km/h) the ML400 CDI still gets around 350 miles.

The only diesel sold in the US made by Mercedes at this time is the E320CDI Sedan. And this model is not sold in California at all...only in 45 states. Eventually this engine and maybe some others will be sold here, but you are looking at mid 2006 or later for both the ML and R Class.

Yes, about middle to late 2006. There's also some new competition coming as BMW also plans to introduce diesels in the USA, in 2007, probably starting with a SUV. And Honda is rumored to work on a diesel engine for the USA.
