EPA MPG Ratings

ANyone seen any Mercedes-released numbers on fuel economy. I've seen everyone else's best guess, with the R350 being 18/26. That's super, I think. However, (and I did not look up the weight of both), why is this so much of an improvement over the ML350-thought they were on the same platform/chassis (same engine, etc.)...

WIth gas prices such as they are, you'd think MBUSA would go ahead and bring us the R320CDI-bet they'd sell a ton of those-Mercedes has the diesels no one else has to improve fleet economy in the SUV class, but won't let us have them!!!

My father is looking to replace his 4th M class but doesn't feel that the fuel economy of the current M is enough-improved; i've got the R on order but hadn't bothered to look at economy as it will be a great improvement over my current Tahoe's 14/17.

I think 18/26 may be a little high on the R350. I have seen a spread of figures but not the approved EPA figures. 14-16 in the city and 19-21 on the highway with the R350 on the high end and the R500 on the low end. Probably will vary by a gallon or two on each end.

Agreed on the diesel...would change my order in a minute but it looks like the end of 2006 or maybe a little earlier.

4 wheels
The R uses a different platform and chasis than the ML.

I get 28mpg to 29mpg on my E350 with extreme conservative driving. I use CC in town too lol. I am sure the R350 could achieve similar numbers depending on drag, and weight and other factors.

The E350 has a curb weight of 3703 and the ML has a curb weight of 4623 (this accd. to MBUSA.com). various sources put the R's weight at approximately 4700. IMHO, i don't think the E350 is an accurate target for efficiency. (Additionally you did not state whether the E350 you are measuring is 4Matic)...

I certainly hope high but expect average mpg. And yes, to answer a question i've read posted here and elsewhere, some of us who can pay $60-70k for the car still DO care what the cost of fuel runs!
