Traded the R Class for an S430
Well I got a call from my local dealer that he had a nice S430 for me to look at. This morning I decided to go look at it and at the same time look over the many R Class he has in inventory. Well once I sat in the White S with Stone and Burl Walnut interior I knew this was going to be an expensive day. I have always wanted a S Class and never quite got around to doing it. Well my health "funk" went south today and I decided to "do it"
At about 4 o'clock I drove my new S Class home. I still think the R is a great Mercedes and the dealer said they are selling well. But I think now that the S is a better choice for me. Since this is a R forum I will be posting on the W220 forum but here is one shot and the URL for some others on my web site. Thanks for all the kind words and concern and I will be reading this forum closely to see how the R is doing.

LOL !! Thats funny.. You were so hot on the R. But I for one can relate to what you did. It looks great! I tend to only like the modified S-Class look, But the color/wheel combo looks sporty and classy. a nice mix. I can see why you bought it.. Good Job !! I am sure you will love the smooth ride. Congrats

I think that equates to about 2K under invoice...I'll have to plug in the specs at Edmunds and see how it comes out. Plus the trade was not inspiring but with the soft E Class market right now, i got $33,705, so not too bad a day on the wallet...:-)
Did you have a W211? I had a W211 I traded in a year ago and only got 40K for it and it was fully loaded....

I just checked Edmunds and they are saying Other Are Paying $80K or just a $1000 off MSRP...so that makes me feel good. Last day of the month, last day of the quarter I guess does mean something to buyers.

You should have come down to LA 10-15K off is the weekend special But for your area it looks like you did good. I personally could not believe the hit my W211 took. I figured that the W203 was going to be the one w/the weaker resale value....go figure. Next time I buy a new MB I will make sure I buy it MUCH MUCH less than invoice

Nevada Jack-
Your decision proved my point from my post in a different thread. The R-Class is not the appropriate vehicle for anyone who needs to seat less than 5 on a regular basis. There are too many other choices that look better, feel better and, presumably, drive better.
I predict the R will be a tough sell for Mercedes, and this is coming from someone who has been on the wait list for one of these since 2002!

I don't know if my post proves your point Jack. Seating had no part in my decision to buy the S Class over the R Class.
On your "tough sell" point...my dealer said the traffic for the R has been heavy and they have not even started to advertise it yet. He indicated he thinks it will be a very popular item.

Seating capacity is foremost in the mind of a potential R-Class purchaser, with storage space coming in a close second. Don't let the Mercedes marketing materials fool you Nevada Jack, the R is aimed squarely at well-heeled minivan purchasers who want an upscale alternative.
About my prediction...only time will tell.

New S-class
I guess u don't like the looks of the New S-class coming out 06. But Yours is a nice choice.
In Hawaii I don't think anyone can get below MSRP....only 1 dealership. Flecture Jones..Mercedes Benz of Honolulu...no other choices. They promote no markup on any models. All MSRP no bargin...the only bargin is if u trade in u can try save yourelf ripping off by bargining.
Or what else should i do with buying new Benz...like the R63? or R500. I don't think they will even give any off when buuying a R63 AMG..
Anyway congrat to Nevada getting the new car and I guess u get out of your personal situation problem u mention before. Enjoy the ride.

For the first time in 11 years I bought a car at FJ...that is because they finally bargained with me and gave me a price I could swallow. You are in a tougher position based on the fact you live in Hawaii...at least we can go to LA or some other city.

It's great to see that you've come to your senses Jack... In my opinion the S-class is infinitely more desirable and makes you wonder who the R-class was built for. The S-class can do all the same with more style, comfort, and prestige. The scary thought is that a loaded R500 isn't much cheaper than what you paid for the S...... You made a great choice and will be thanking your lucky stars you didn't buy an R-class.. Still doing the cross country road trip?

I have followed all your posts and thoughts regarding the R that have been in this forum. Its been a great source of information as your passion for it really helped educate me (and no doubt many others) about the R.
So, thanks for all the information, and congratulations on a sensational new car, and by all reports, a good deal too!
Cheers,
Tim.
