Highly recommended Mtec HID kit.
Reason: Easy to do, comes with clip holders to headlight socket and save the OEM clip bulb holder if going back to OEM halogen lights.

MTEC HID 6000K VS 4300K
Just switched 6000K to 4300K, I can see much better than 6000k (blue tint and wife complained).
Wife can see much better in 4300K than 6000K.
Also, changed parking lights to PIAA Xtreme bulb (not bighter than OEM but more white with little blue and close match to HID.
For look, 6000k is way to go but not performance.
6000K (Driver side) VS 4300K (Passenger side).

would you guys happen to know where to buy the headlight housing cover. I'm about to install one on my GL450 but need a pair of extra housing covers just in case... Heard someone with a GL had a conversion gone bad.

If conversion goes bad, go back to OEM halogen and plug the housing cover hole with 1" round plastic plug or sheet metal plug.

I wonder where I can buy spare covers.

I just bought an R500 without Xenons and am also going to add HID's. I see that everyone here says the Mtek kit is the best. I found it on ebay for $320 plus shipping. Is this the best price that is available? Please let me know. Thanks for all the information in this post. You guys are great! Mark

If you are coming from BMW X5 (I replaced that with my R500), a lot of the BMW users use this Apexcone HID kit from this vendor: http://www.ddmtuning.com.
I am using it for my wife's C300 and it is working great so far.

The X5 was my wifes now Im taking it and she will get the R500. The X5's xenons are awesome (as is the whole car!) and I need to do the upgrade to the R asap! Is that kit as complete are the mtek one? I want plug and play. Thanks!

M3- take a look on these posts and the posts on www.benzworld.org
all the kits are the same for the most part. They're all made in china and have the same bulb and ballast technology. The only thing the MTEC has that other kits don't have is that it comes with a little clip so you don't have to use your car's stock bulb clip. They're all plug and play and they all are installed pretty much the same. I would caution getting too cheap of a kit, but personally and this is just my opinion, i feel the MTEC kits are way overpriced as they're the same as the APEX kits and other kits mentioned on these boards. Also, get the 4300k bulbs, don't get 6000k. 4300k is stock lumens and color and gives you the best brightness and viewing.
If you do decide to get the MTEC kit, get the kit for the SLK, it's the same as the R kit they sell and for some reason, it's $75 or so less. I still think it's wickedly overpriced. And it's not made in Japan, it's made in China.

The problem is not the HID light itself but it is the projector. The non OEM HID R-class's projectors are designed to focus the halogen bulb's light pattern.
But end of the day, in my opinion, HID kit is still brigher and nicer than not using the HID kit.

Hello, R-classers. I'm trying to install an HID conversion kit in my GL450. I have NO support whatsoever from other GL class owners (too afraid to try it on theirs maybe?) So I assume I'm one of the very few GL owners willing to try this mod.
Anyway, I ran into a small problem with the retainer clip. The rear end of the HID bulb was a tad bit too big for the clip. I cant lock the bulb in the housing since the clip is sticking out way too much. Before I take my dremel out and start hacking away, does anyone have a better idea?

Hi Earl:
Some of the kits have bigger ends on the bulbs. I saw a posting somewhere else where an owner had to dremel out the center of the clip. That may be your only option.
Maybe, could you call the people you bought the kit from and ask if they have any bulbs with the thinner ends? If they don't, could you return the bulbs and get a credit and order it from a company that sells thinner bulbs? PM me and i can recommend a couple of manufacturers that sell bulbs with thin ends, if you can get a credit.

i bought some random H7 kit that had a pretty good warranty, forgot who it was though, but it was under $90 shipped from ebay. had to do a lot of work to make it fit in the original metal clips but it looks good. i ordered a 5k kit, but i think its 6k for some reason. seems too blue but no one complains

How is what kit compared to the Kaixen? Kaixen is one of the few Korean manufacturers and it's supposed to be a nice kit comparable to some of the higher end CHinese manufacturers. Hard to find in the US but a good kit. I think you can find it for around $150 or so if you look around.

If you read the thread, the majority of this thread is about MTEC hid kit then you will know what I asking.
