Headrest DVD system Installation
I bought a Headrest DVD system on ebay and I am planning to installed it myself (hopefully) to my "new to me" used R500.
Before I start tackle the job, I am looking for some help to make the job easier:
1. I have a 06, so it doesn't come with the active head restraint system. Can someone help and let me know how I can remove the two front headrests? The car has the comfort package, so it comes with the power headrests.
2. I am looking for a 12V power source that is closed by the front seats. I know there are two 12V cigarette outlets underneath the rear climate control console. Does anyone know how to remove the cover(s), so I can tap to those power sources? ? Or there are other better power sources that I can use.
Thanks in Advance and I will definitely write up the steps during my installation.

See STAR service manual library Model 251
Instructions to retrofit the MB DVD player that is mounted to the rear of the front console are included over four pages - and also for dismantling the headrests. I can't legally reproduce them "in whole or in part" but can tell you there's wires in the rear floor compartment where the battery is -and underneath the center console.

2. best place to get power is the front cigarette lighter. undo the two torx screws under the cupholder, pull the side panels and remove the small black cover under the armrest. the whole center part will then be removable.

Thanks for the great info. I am actually thinking about tab to the battery directly since it is really just underneath the seats..... any opinion on that?
Thanks again!!

I suggest that you tap into center cigarette socket because it turn off when engine is off.
I have overhead DVD installed by my neighbor who owns a H & R radio installation store and he tapped into the cigarette socket near the passenger side. It will not turn off when the engine is off but it will turn off itself when battery is low.

My neighbor (his assembler tapped the wire from below the glove box) but that is for passenger side not the center console.

This is awesome. I was just able to remove the console using your instruction and look at the lighter power outlet underneath it.
My next question is what will be the best way to tap to the power source there. It seems like there are many wires going there including an adaptor. Can you help and provide me some suggestion?
Btw, thanks for your earlier tips on removing the back panel. I was able to install the DVD headsets and all the wires inside the seats. Super easy there.... getting power is another story....
Thanks!!

The harness to the cigarette plug has three wires: two thick and one thin. The thick brown wire is gnd. the other wire (usually a thick black/blue stripe or blue) is 12v switched. The easiest way to tap power is to use T-Taps whcih you can get at your local auto parts store. just make sure you get the large gauge ones (yellow)

I am actually doing the exact upgrade to my "new to me" 2006 R350. I purchased the visualogic headrest on ebay but my dealer would not install so I have tackled the job myself. Finding this thread was a huge bonus. My only question is whether I need to tap into all three wires on the cig. lighter or just the two wires (switched and ground) that Rob described. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The vizualogic kit has 4 wires: Black,Green,Red,and Yellow
Black and Green go to the thick Brown at the cigarette plug.
Red goes to the thick black/blue stripe at the cigarette plug.
Yellow goes to the thick red wire on the back of the radio.

Thanks so much Rob. My only question now is how do I get to the red wire behind the radio? Another post spoke of taking out the hvac system first, but I cant seem to find the exact places to put the tools to take out the hvac system and therefore I can't get to the radio. Can you provide any pointers to help with this? Thanks in advance.

Rob, i can't thank you enough. I had been feeling all around the hvac system with no luck. After your post I was able to get the radio out in less than 10 minutes. Not only was I able to finish the install on the headrest dvd but it allowed me to swap out the command for one with nav. Dealer told me that would take hours and would not do it since I bought the command with nav from another source. With your input it literally took less than 15 minutes, everything was prewired including the gps antenna. One night two projects done. Thanks again. You really are an asset on this board.

I bought T-tap (yellow color-12 gauge) @ Radio Shack and tapped into the cigarette plug but it made no contact.
Finally, I used T-tap (Blue color - 18/14 gauge) and have no problem.

Vizualogic from S class?
I think I shall stay away from eBay, keep doing these impulse buying
Just saw a Vizualogic A1250 for 2007 S class. It's just a DVD player, with right color, and same shape of ones for our R class ... so I bought it. Right after, I am having the doubts ... if they are the same, why would they having different part#? 710792146510 vs 710-79054-XX ?
Guess I will find out when I can't install it after receiving it. help ...
Steve.

I received the S class Vizualogic A1250 last night!
Very nervous to find out that the metal pieces that hold under the headrest plastic don't fit. That's why they have different ones for the SUVs. The Vizualogic sales service guy was not use at all, just told me to get the right type.
After twisting the metal for couple hours, I successfully got them ON! the metal just look tough, but easy to be bended.
Having a cup of coffee, and taking a break for my sore fingers. Will continue to do the power and radio connector later.
Another question is that, where did your guys put the control box? under/in the glove box? and how to wire to the glove box? want to connect to the aux input.
