it should be here in a week or two. Since I have a growing family, I needed a minivan. Since I HAD to have airmatic and the V8, I had to purchase a used one.

It took me over 5 months to find one with panorama, parktronic, keylessgo, airmatic and V8! Damn these cars are hard to find. Looking at netstar, only 15% of these early cars were ordered with keylessgo. The only option my car doesn't have is AMG package and DVD entertainment system Oh well, the kids are going to have to suffer...

I got it at auction in SF. I'll post some pics when I get it serviced and detailed.

Congrats to you.

For less than $1K, you can have 10" overhead LCD w/DVD player and listen thru.OEM HK sound system.

Not with the Pano roof he can't. It will be headrest monitors, like the rest of us that have the Pano option.

4 dvd headrest option?

since I will need 4 dvd headrests, what is the most "reasonable" setup?

My car is the macadamia color. I already replied to someone that had them for sale, but he has already sold them.

thanks in advance.

did you see the pewter keylessgo one that went through manheim atlanta last week? I didn't bid on it because it didn't have panorama roof. My guy has been checking religiously for the past 4 months and only have seen 3 R500s come through with keylessgo in silver or pewter. Mine was the first one with keylessgo, panorama roof and active suspension in silver- thus I had to pay almost retail

Was the car worth top dollar... to the general auction buyer, NO WAY. But to my wife who has to manage twin newborns and my 4 YO, keylessgo was a dealbreaker. The active suspension & V8 was a dealbreaker for me.

I paid $25k before auction fees & transport.

$25K actually is not bad if your car is in the cat 4 or 5 in condition with decent mileage. Mine is the exact specs with comfort and trim package but without Parktonic in black/black. Agree with you that once you have keyless go, it will be difficult to live without it. Panorama sunroof is another must have for the kids and only thing I don't use much is Airmatic. I have it but 80% of time my R is in Normal. Only cool thing is if I want to lower the car, it will be much easier.

Anyway, your R (mine as well) was over $67K MSRP only two years ago and you are getting it for $25K+fees. Time for celebration!!!

Regarding the headset monitors, the cheaper option is Audiovox from Circuit City. It is $699 for two with free installation. The downside is the color will not much perfectly and also, it is lacking some of the standard feature such as wireless headphone.

If you want to go for the near-custom setup, I am pretty sure you know Vizualogic. Lastly, check eBay and they may have some deals too.

According to the dealer I got mine, it has a lot to do with the stablized gas price. One time people are fearing the gas will be above $6/Gallon and it killed pretty much the sales of all the SUVs and trucks. Since the oil price is dropping like a rock the last one month, people are willing to look into SUV again and the market is getting a bit better.

My car has the the comfort package, full leather trim package, xenon lighting package, entertainment package, heated seats, premium package, multi-contour seats, sirius, 18" wheels. Basically fully loaded. The only thing it doesnt have is AMG package or DVD headrests.

The car has 21K miles if I remember correctly.

I just found out that auction and transport fees are another $1k!

Yes, I saw all those at riverside. None of them had keylessgo. Don't ask, but my lazy wife would happily pay full sticker price for keylessgo Otherwise I could have saved about $3k easily

If you want to go for the near-custom setup, I am pretty sure you know Vizualogic. Lastly, check eBay and they may have some deals too.
Thanks for the info on audiovox. I dont think my 4YO kid will know the difference between audiovox or vizualogic. While my primary TV is a 60" 1080p plasma, his bedroom tv is my old 42" 480p samsung

R350
Congrats to you for the nicely equipped R500.
Sorry for my ignorance but would you or anyone please educate me how one can participate in the Manheim aution to buy a car? Do I need to find a dealer to bid on behalf of me? I got my CPO '06 R350 a few months ago from a local MB dealer and after reading the posts I may get a better deal next time from the aution.

Thanks,
overland

The car has 21K miles if I remember correctly.

I just found out that auction and transport fees are another $1k!
Even with an additional $1K for transport, it is still a pretty good deal with all those options.

I actually think the Contour and Lighting packages are less common than Keyless go. Mine doesn't have those two options.

Regarding the AudioVox headset, the leather color will not be a perfect match to your seats and you definitely want to check that out and make sure it will not be an eye sore. Since mine is back, it was easier.

These prices make me want to vomit. I guess my 2006 R500 Saks 5th Ave edition w/ 35K miles is worth about 20 bucks.

Dont think about that. I purchased one of the very the first batch of e500 w211s that came to the US over 5 years ago. That car was over 65K with all the options, extras and taxes. I cringe every time I look at the auction prices, so much so that I never look at my exact car anymore.

as long as you enjoy your car, don't look back.

Overland, you need to find someone with a dealer license that will purchase one for you. I usually like to purchase lease returns from the manufacturer's financing company since there is still a little warranty left.

Thing is, if you shop around and do some hard negotiation, you may be able to get a car that is only $500-$1k over auction prices and after fees since used car dealers don't make as much margin anymore.

either way, if you want to grab the bull by the horns and find something specific for you, send me a PM and I will give you my guy's contact info.

1. i doubt you will be able to find many dealers or used lots that will sell you a car for $1000 over auction prices. MB dealers are marking up 350s/500s in the DC area by at least $5-10k, $10k+ if it is a CPO.

2. you need to find a used dealer who goes to auction who is willing to find you a specific car for auction price + a fee. if you find a used dealer who will let you go to auction with them, it is even better as you can handpick. check in with "itswindee" (her name is wendy) on the C class (W203) board, i believe she will do it for a flat fee...she has a sticky post entitled "Manheim" at the top of the page.

alternatively check with friends til you find someone who knows a used dealer in your area who you become your friend.

3. $25k for that car with those options is a great deal. my car stickered for $63k and my buyout is $42k. right now i m expecting MB to drop $10-12k and optimistic that it will drop further. my car is above avg with less than 20k miles, it would only fetch $22-24k at auction. I m not going to pay more than $25-26 for it ( i know its history so i ll pay a small premium) but that means MB needs to come down $16k-17k off my buyout assuming auction prices do not continue to drop...my lease is up in Nov. Economic upheaval and ensuing recession are bound to push these prices down even further....

Difference is, your 2003 E500 was 65K 5 years ago, my R500 was 70K 2 years ago and they're both worth close to the same.

Bleck!

I am talking about after all fees- auction house fees, transport fees, fixing up any dents, maintenance and detailing fees.

CPO cars from the dealer- absolutely no way. those warranties do cost the dealers $. Used car dealers here in Los Angeles (probably the used car capital of the world), most certainly yes. Now I am not talking about the fancy used car dealers in beverly hills or newport beach, but rather the low margin ones in san gabriel, koreatown, fullerton and a few other spots where the used car dealers are really hurting right now. I've heard of some used car dealers selling cars below their true cost just to reduce their inventory right now.

I would totally agree with the above statement. The person who got my car did it for a flat fee (nice fat steak dinner at mortons). If you ask around, you will find a hungry used car dealer who would provide this service for you. I wouldn't pay him more than $500-1000 for it though since it is a pretty simple job. Just do all the homework for him- get the vin and run it through netstar to see which options it has along with the dealer and service history.

I would definitely pay a premium for a used car if I knew the previous owner. With a leased car you really never know- did they use regular unleaded gas, did they drive the car very hard, did they take care of the car, etc. I would pay thousands over auction prices if I truly knew the car was pampered.

I know mbusa is going 10K+ off residuals. keep us posted! Just do your homework, give them the manheim numbers. let them know that you know what you are talking about.
