How can I tell 2WD from 4matic?

I'm looking for R500 2006-2007 and just realized they were also available with 2WD option. How common is 2WD option (or is it 4matic which is an option) in R500? I'd prefer 4matic, especially because I have RV trailer but also considering winter driving so I'd really need to know if the car I'm checking out has 4matic or not.

I have seen couple of R500's which both have option
840 elimination of all-wheel drive 4 x 2 (for cross-country vehicles only)
So does this mean it's 2WD? Or is this just badge elimination?

The thing is, if I check underneath the car, I can see drive shafts going to each wheel. Even the owner of the car said it's 2WD but then I can see all 4 drive shafts and I'm really Any other way to see if it's 2WD or 4matic? I think if it's 2WD, it doesn't have drive shafts in the front, right? At least I haven't seen this in any other 2WD Mercedes models where 4matic has been an option

If I'n not mistaken all 06's and 07's are 4Matic, I don't believe the 2wd option was available until '08

R500
All R500 are AWD/4matic. Only the 2008 R350 have the 2WD or AWD option. Take the VIN to your local MB dealer and make sure the run to check its history. They can confirm.

Thanks! Then it must be seller's misunderstanding. Maybe he has seen that code of elimination of all-wheel drive (if it's that 840) and thought it's 2WD then.

Actually Carfax told also it's All wheel drive and I guess I can rely on them

I'll take the VIN to the local dealer anyway to check the service history etc.

This is how I understand it, too.

Of course since 4WD is more expensive, I'd say 2WD is standard and 4WD is the "option."
