Thumbs down Thoughts on MB Extended Warranties

Picking up an 2008 R350 with less than 23,000 miles on Saturday. AMG 20" wheel option. Car is pretty much fully loaded except for entertainment system.

Dealership has offered extended warranties for car (2 extra years approximately $2,000.00) wheel and tire for 5 years (approximately $700.00) and lifetime LoJack (approximately $1,000.00).

I say no to all but wanted to hear from actual R350 owners. Yes or no to buying the extended warranties and why?

I didn't get any. And it is non transferable.

No reasons on why not getting it since the benefit didn't out weight the cost..

I got mine from dealer and it has paid for itself so far already. I think it's more than worth it. Also, especially if you plan to keep your wheel option OEM, the rims are aluminum. Not very friendly on most U.S. roads w/ pot-holes. Two bent rims in two years...and I only paid $500.00 for my wheel & tire warranty. It paid for itself.

LoJack...if you live in an area that might need it, I would say go for it.

if you're going to get the extended warranty, negotiate the price. Find out how much it costs the dealer and go off that price. And make sure it's an MB warranty and not a dealership warranty. I'm not a huge fan of Lojack, I'd rather pay 5-10 bucks per year and get gap coverage on my insurance policy in case it gets stolen.

+1. Forgot about GAP insurance. That's a better bet.

I purchased the extended warranty for 2 years after the new car factory warranty will end. In my view it is a no brainer. Just ask your dealer about the cost of repair of electrical components, motors etc. The parts are very expensive as is the labor cost. In an older MB I had, I needed the sunroof bridge replaced because the sunroof would get stuck open. The part was only $200 which is cheap for Benz, but the job required 8+ hours of labor at $90+ per hour... And I am only mentioning convenience components. If your tranny needs replaced you would pretty much salvage the vehicle since a new MB 7-speed tranny costs more than $10,000 installed.
To decide whether or not you need the extended warranty, you need to consider the mileage of your vehicle and how long you plan on keeping it. It is an insurance policy you may or may not need.

I am someone that never buys extended warranties on anything except vehicles, and it always seems that I get at least my monies worth.

Here's the deal on Lojack- 99.9% of cars never get stolen. you're paying $1,000 for a lojack on a car that you will keep 6-7 years max. 1000/7 is $142 per year over 7 years. Lojack will give you about 10-20% savings on your comp portion of your insurance. On mine, that was about a $40 savings per year. I lease so I have gap insurance built into the lease, but on purchases, gap insurance is $10 a year. so to get lojack, the real cost is $100 per year after insurance discounts and to get gap insurance is $10 a year.

I usually so no to all the extras when buying a car but after a lot of thought, i went ahead and got the extended warranty on 06 R500 with 30k.

We got the warranty for about 1700, which added another 2 years to the original, which still had a year left.

I plan on keeping the ride for a long time and I figured over the next 3 years the car will hit the 5 to 6 year old mark. In my experience this is when things go wrong. Also, I didn't want to worry about how I would pay for really expensive repairs in the future. I have heard of some repairs running as high as 1500 for some really simple things like electronics and convenience items. The extra $15 to 20 a month is worth the piece of mind to mind and I didn't want to take that money out of savings to pay for those kinds of repairs

I would say no to the rest of the stuff. Good luck!!

Another good thing about extended warranties. I took my R in for a service yesterday (Sat.), and mentioned that I had been getting intermittent messages for bulbs out. Well, it turns out the housing needed to be altered w/ a new housing (which for some reason they already knew about 'cause they had them in stock (aside-there was another R in for the same reason). And was covered under ext. warranty. Would have cost $165 if not. It's not much, but it still would have been a hassle and an expense that I wasn't expecting.

On another side note, it was kinda weird to see 4 R-classes getting serviced at once. I usually never see more than 1 other than mine at any other time. Just kind of neat.
