"Malfunction" on Display

I recently went on a road trip to Florida in our 2007 R320CDI. It has an aftermarket hitch on it (no electrics wired in just used for 2 bikes). Anyway while driving we would occasionally get this msg on the multi-function display that sai "Malfunction" and that is it. It showed a picture of the vehicle and an arrow pointing to the middle of the underside. It went away after restarting and no performance or ride difference was noted, but it would eventually re-appear. Any ideas?

What a great error message "Malfunction". Shame it was not more descriptive. If you have access to a code reader, I would hook it up and see if it sais anything. I am on a trip from Indiana to Colorado and installed an aftermarket hitch on my R500 before the trip to use to carry a cargo carrier and bag. No error messages or issues at all doing this. If vehicle is under warranty, take it in and let them hook it up to STAR and see what the problem is, may have nothing to do with the hitch at all.

Check your tire pressure, for some reason I was getting a similar message when I had a spare tire on, instead of a TPS Malfunction warning. Otherwise I would say bring it in to your service center and have them run a check.

Assume you checked owners manual ... where most malfunction messages are detailed?

I would have the "malfunction" looked at immediately. Two reasons, first MB will be able to tell when the malfunction notice was logged, and the time between when you got it (first) and the time your in for service. Second, it's telling you there is something wrong with the undercarriage of the vehicle. If you've recently traveled over bumpy or harsh road conditions, there could be a problem, and the car is obviously telling you it needs attention.

I would take it in, ASAP.
