Will there be a total redesign of the R-class in 2012
#2
Huh? Go to an MB dealership or the web at MBUSA.com and see the 2011 R Class. It already looks different than ours (albeit, just the front and a little bit on the rear). If ever there is a total redesign I don't think it won't be due for 2012.

Blowing smoke.
MB will run a design for a certain number of years and the R is not to that number yet.
Let's face it, the R was years ahead of the curve and now other car companies are putting together the same basic vehicle. Think of Porsche, GM, Honda/Acura, and Ford.
I think we'll see this body style gain in popularity.

2008 R350 & 2008 C300
Last press release I saw had Dr. Z saying the new ground up R will be late 2012 early 2013. I think a lot of it will depend on how well this new refreshed model does. The R class was the first vehicle of its kind, sadly it paid the price for it. Other manufacturers have had time to see what worked, what didn't, and have since released their own versions, but the niche market still hasn't taken off.

I imagine that MB dont like to make a habit of having totally new chassis/bodies coming through the same plant at the same time. MBUSI is starting to get ready for the 166 then it has to get plant I ready for the C class. I imagine the 251 will get a redo and then the X164 afterwards.

The nonly other company that has come close to releasing a vehicle like the R class is Ford, the S-Max is pretty darn close in concept and looks, I can't think of anyon e else who has come close. I think for MB the R class has become a failure, in Europe it only appears to be popular as a hearse.

Yes, I saw many in Beijing this past summer. Many people have the Chinese-made Odyssey there(it's 5 door wagon and looks like a bit smaller R350 - not the minivan you see in the US). While Cayennes and Q7s are both very popular, many wealthy families have 3 kids so will need larger car like R350 to travel around in style.
