Brake flush and Tranny TSB

Hi guys,

Are you guys getting brake flush every 2 yrs?
My MB dealer's recommending it, about $150, I think...even though another MB dealer quoting $89.

also, MB dealer checked out my tranny and says it's "within range" and smooth to them - so they won't do the tranny svc per the TSB. how many of you guys have had the TSB? thx.

P.S. My MB dealer confirmed the Tranny 39k svc is JUST the first 39k - not required at 78k or in the future(huh?)

Had my tranny fluid replaced at 39K as per the service schedule. It is a one time flush and not every 39K. I also replaced brake fluid for eighty some dollars.

If you look at the maintenance schedule it states trans fluid change once at 39K. If you do it every 40K you are wasting plenty of $$$.

If you don't do it

you are risking thousands of dollars.
You choose MB was wrong about lifetime fill and the biggest rebuilder in the business recs fluid changes every 40k as the surest way to a long trans life.
722.9 fluid is not that much for a pan drain every other year or so.
But hey if a hundred bucks of fluid is going to break your bank,by all means save up for a new trans when yours goes into limp mode
mobil 1 atf 134 722.9 7 speed spec some walmarts carry it for 6bucks if money is an issue.

I too had my 08 R320 Trans fluid changed at the 40,000 mile service. The dealer recommended synthetic transmission fluid that they said will last 100,000 miles. It wasn't cheap, but they said they've had good results and I trust my MB dealer.

My brake fluid was done at 60,000 miles.

Ohlord, it has nothing to do about cost and everything to do about following manufacturers recommendations to the "T". You maybe right. I might be risking thousands in repairs but MB is risking their entire company reputation that took a hundred years to build. Why do you think they would do that? I have heard from many folks that have talked to the "best in the business" and doubt if any of these folks have ever worked on a German car. You make a valid point and I intend on checking my trans fluid in subsequent years but not replace it unless MB tells me to do so.

Also, this conversation reminds me of some folks telling me to change my oil every three thousand miles because their uncle "Best in the business" told them so, although he neglected to tell that he works on Chevys from the 80s.

Does it make sense that my dealer saying I had brake flush in 2008, THEREFORE I should do it again this yr - about 30k driven since It's not a big dollar amount(though they're charging $149 vs. some MB dealers charging $89), but they did give me a GLK to drive for a few days, so I don't want to bicker over $60.

hi all,
just found out that MB dealer NEVER did the tranny job that they told me the did at 39K miles, and NOW will do it at 67k miles.
what are the impact of this, and are there latent effects into the future?
i will document, but want to know what to watch out for.
P.s. I am soooo pissed right now - even 2 days ago, the sales mgr still insisted the work was done despite no records in svc dept and technician saying it was the orig plug from factory based on same paint shade. ugh!

you probably won't have any problems 67k without a tranny fluid change since you had synthetic in the first place....just make sure that the EFFIN STEALERSHIP did not charge you for the service back then and if they did RAISE EFFFIN HELL and have them do the service for free.

i had my tranny serviced at the stealer at 43k miles and the fluid should have been done earlier as it was looking cooked. as far as lifetime fluid after that service, imho it is short sighted. look at bmw x5's w/ the supposedly lifetime tranny fluid...plenty of no more reverse trannys at 70k miles that had never been serviced as per the bmw maintenance schedule...service it every 40k miles if you want it to live a long time.

For a brake flush, is ther anything out of the ordinary if I were to do it my self? is it straight forward like any other car?

I did mine myself when I changed the pads, nothing was unusual if you have done it on other vehicles. I used a Motive Power Bleeder (big plastic tank that you can pressurize) + ATE Super Blue DOT 4 brake fluid -- the blue color helps with knowing when all of the old Gold/Amber colored fluid is out of the lines. I can't remember which wheels I did in what order, but I think I started at the back ones and worked my way forward. Flushing the brake fluid is something that you should do every 2 years -- just to keep the moisture build up in the fluid out of your brake system.
