Questions about my 320 i just bought

We bought a CPO 2008 R320 CID with 16018 miles on odometer. Have had it 3 week and discovered the following things. Changed the air filter to K&N, old air filters were almost clogged up. Car has new tires. Front pads have been replaced. Back pads appear to in need of replacement. Oil has 3000 miles on it but appears to be very dirty. Are these normal things for car with this mileage? Runs great and average out 29+ mpg on a 500 mile trip.

The oil needs changed every 10K miles approx. The computer will tell you how many miles until the next service (A or B etc). A lot of folks (including myself) on this and other forums will advise against K&N filter being used instead of the OEM since the risks far outweigh any benefits, however it is up to you (of course). Do you have any service records? As far as the pads are concerned, it always depends on the type of driving the previous owner did (highway vs city).

Welcome to the forum and enjoy your new ride!

I am very suspicious of your rear pads, even when I was a teen and drove around like Mario Andretti everywhere I couldn't wear a pad set out in just 16K miles. I'm also suprised the tires didn't last long? My wife has put almost 20K on our R350 since we bought it last year and our Conti's that had 25K CPO miles on them looked new still and today they are roughly 60% still.

Motor oil in a diesel will be black about 5 seconds after starting the engine after an oil change. This is any and all diesel engines.

Change your oil at recommended intervals only. It's actually bad for your engine to change it sooner (given that it's now the 21st century and there is, not surprisingly, new technology).

Replace the K&Ns with OE filters ASAP, as they will destroy your MAF sensor with oil mist. This will NOT be covered under warranty.

There is ZERO advantage to changing to K&N since there is ZERO difference in airflow between an OE filter and no filter at all. The K&N does NOT filter better than the OE filter, either.

Thanks for the replies.

Thanks guys for the responses. I am torn on the K & N filter controversey. I had an E36 BMW M3 that i drove 95,000 miles with a K & N filter and never cleaned the MAP. It was running the same at 95K as it did new and still didn't use any oil.
How many miles do the OEM air filters last. i know the book show a change at 40,000 and the ones i replaced with very close to being clogged. see attached photos. Will try and find the time to remove a back wheel this week and photo the pad and rotor.

I agree.
The factory oil filled K & N filter should not clog the MAP.
The MAP will be clogged (dirty) only when people clean out the old K & N filter and apply too much oil with the kit.
The best way is discard the dirty K & N filter and replace with the new one.

I am the dumb person who just over oil my K&N .. CEL shows up after a day of driving after cleaning/oiling the filter. It didn't seam like too much oil to me, well ... buying a leaner, will try to clean it first before buying a new one. Need to climb all the way to the back of the engine to remove the unit ... hope it will not be too hard.

I had an 08 CDI and never replaced the brake pads with 105,000 miles. 16,000 miles on brakes seems rough, almost hard to do.

My car was great. I took it in when they said to take it in and all was okay.

I was 2/3 highway and got 30,000 from my tires.

Don't be alarmed if you get a "check oil" light on your dash at highway speeds. That happened for a bit and the dealership had to do something with the computer.

Enjoy.

The air filters are normal, it was not schedule to have them replaced yet. Brakes you can never tell, if the rotors frequently got rusty from lack of use it will eat up pads faster.
There is nothing wrong with K&N filters, I use them on everything and have 500000 miles of use with VW's not a failed maf. They save the enviroment by reusing rather then throwing out. Mafs fail no matter what air filter is installed...
The average for most current SUVs (german) for brakes is around 25000 miles. They are heavy, they don't have much sense of speed (hence more heavy braking) and they often get overdriven. I often see people needing a full brake job and tires long before their lease is up, and they did not budget for it!
